INTRODUCTION TO
QUALITATIVE
RESEARCH
What is Qualitative Research?

Qualitative research is concerned

with developing explanations of
social phenomena. It aims to help
us to understand the social world in
which we live and why things are
the way they are.
What is Qualitative Research?
It is concerned with the social aspects of
our world and seeks to answer questions
about:

v Why people behave the way they do?

v How opinions and attitudes are
formed?
v How people are affected by the events
that go on around them?
v How and why cultures and practices
have developed in the way they have?
What is Qualitative Research?

Qualitative research involves collecting

and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g.,
text, video, or audio) to understand
concepts, opinions, or experiences. It can
be used to gather in-depth insights into
a problem or generate new ideas for
research. (Bhandari, 2020)
What does qualitative research focus on?
Qualitative research is an approach that
focuses on people and their
experiences, behaviours and opinions.
The qualitative researcher seeks to
answer questions of 'how' and 'why',
providing detailed insight and
understanding, which quantitative
methods cannot reach.

A rule of thumb for deciding when
to use qualitative data is:

ESSENCE OF
QUALITATIVE
DATA - The essence of qualitative research is the researcher
who tries to understand (and to explain) how people
experience their (work) situation.

- Qualitative data is important in determining the

particular frequency of traits or characteristics. It
allows the researchers to form parameters through
which larger data sets can be observed. Qualitative
data provides the means by which observers can
quantify the world around them.
ESSENCE OF
QUALITATIVE
DATA

- Qualitative research attempts to broaden

and/or deepen our understanding of how
things came to be the way they are in our
social world.
research question:
How satisfied are students with their
studies?

We conduct in-depth interviews with 15 students and ask them

open-ended questions such as: “How satisfied are you with your
studies?”, “What is the most positive aspect of your study
program?” and “What can be done to improve the study program?”

Based on the answers we get we can ask follow-up questions to

clarify things. We transcribe all interviews using transcription
software and try to find commonalities and patterns.
“Everything is theoretically
impossible, until it is done.”
