Draft Specification

Site Survey of Port Window Size for the RealD XL

Rod Archer

July 16, 2008

The purpose of this specification is to allow field engineers to determine if a projection

room’s port window is adequate for use with the RealD XL and mount.

The RealD XL produces an enlarged image. In some cases the port window may need to
be made taller and wider to accommodate the XL.

1. For new theaters, where a RealD XL may be used, the port window should be at least
24 x 24 inches centered 48 inches from the floor.

2. For existing theaters without an installed digital projector, RealD can determine if the
installed port window is adequate. Please provide the following data:

a Model of projector to be used

b. Width and height of the image on-screen in scope format
c. Width and height of the image on-screen in flat format
d. Throw distance from the projector lens to the projection screen
e. Thickness of the port wall (if thicker than a normal wall)
f. Vertical distance from the bottom of the projection screen to the centerline
of the projector lens

3. For theaters with a digital projector installed, the following procedure will determine
the adequacy of the port window.

1) Position the projector so that its lens is at least 12 inches away from the port
window frame.

2) Mask the projection screen to its largest screen format - scope for side masked
screens and flat for top masked screens.

3) Turn on the projector and project a framing chart, either scope or flat.

4) Adjust the projector so that the framing chart fills the projection screen.

a. Adjust the projector’s height so that the light beam clears the bottom
edge of the port window by at least ½ inch.
b. Ensure that the projector lens is still at least 12 inches from the port
window frame.
5) To accommodate the larger beam of the RealD XL, the image projected onto the
port window must have a minimum clear space of 4 inches per side and 8 inches
at the top. A sheet of paper placed on the port window will aid in determining
that this minimum space exists.

6) The RealD XL projects two beams, one above the other. The lower beam is the
same as a beam projected without the XL. The upper beam is larger. The extra 4
inches on each side and 8 inches above are required to accommodate the upper
beam.

7) These specifications constitute the minimum required port window clearance to

assure successful use of the RealD XL system.
