Exercise 1
Open a new map in ArcGIS Pro and add the “circles”, “countries_WGS1984” and “lat_long” layers into a
new map.

a) What is the coordinate system of the “Map”? WGS 1984 ease grid

b) Change the coordinate system of the map to the “Mollweide (world)” projection and.

c) Change again the coordinate system to “Robinson (world)”.

d)
Out of these 3 projections, which one has a smaller “error” in the measurement of distances close to the
poles of the earth?

robinson

a) Change again the coordinate systems using “Plate Carre (world)” and “Mercator
(world)”.
Which one of these 2 you think has a bigger error in the distance's measurement near the poles?

Mercater

• Add the “South_America” layer to the map.

o What is the coordinate system of the “South_America” layer? Do you think this is a
“Geographic Coordinate System” or a “Projected Coordinate System”? I consider that is
a GCS

o What tool from the ArcGIS Toolbox can you use to assign this layer a coordinate system?

Define projection tool

o Assign the “Provisional South American Datum 1956” coordinate system to the
South_America layer.
• Now, we will create 2 new copies of the “South_America” layer, assigning to them the
Geographic Coordinate System “WGS 1984”.

o What geoprocessing tool should I use to generate these 2 new layers with the
appropriate CRS?
o Generate a new layer called “South_America_5” using the CRS mentioned above
and apply the Geographic Transformation “PSAD_1956_To_WGS_1984_5”.
o Generate another layer called “South_America_10” using the same CRS but this
time apply the Geographic Transformation “PSAD_1956_To_WGS_1984_10”.
Create a new map in ArcGIS Pro and add the 2 layers you just created: South_America_5 and
South_America_10.
1. At a world-wide scale, do you notice any difference or misalignment between the
country borders of the two layers?I noticed it a little bit because of the labels, but I cant
perceive it at one sight
2. Zoom-in to a border between two countries at a 1:1,000 scale. Do you notice any
difference between the layers now?

3. If you found a difference, use the Measure tool to find how big the difference is, and
explain why you think this happened.
I found some places where the difference is between 2000 and 3000 KM, I Guess is
about the Grid projection that i´d use
4. Is the difference the same across the entire continent? Why?
No! because it depends completely of their geolocalization and the reference point

Exercise 2

Choose any country of the world that you want (other than Mexico and the US) and identify
one official geographic coordinate system and one official projected coordinate system of that
country.
Once you’ve identified them, include in your evidence document the following characteristics:
1. Name WGS 84 / Cape Verde National
2. WKID: EPSG:4826
3. Units: METRE
4. Datum: World Geodetic System 1984
5. Related geographic transformations NA
WGS 84 / Cape Verde National is a projected CRS last revised on 17 de junio
de 2020 and is suitable for use in Cape Verde - onshore and offshore. Includes
Boa Vista, Brava, Fogo, Maio, Sal, Santo Antao, Sao Nicolau, Sao Tiago, Sao
Vicente. WGS 84 / Cape Verde National uses the WGS 84 geographic 2D CRS
as its base CRS and the Cape Verde National (Lambert Conic Conformal (2SP))
as its projection. WGS 84 / Cape Verde National is a CRS for Medium scale
studies and topographic mapping. It was defined by information from Ministry of
Infrastructure and Transportation.. Adopted in October 2004.
