GROUP ASSIGNMENT- BEARINGS
Answer ALL questions.
Write all distances correct to three (3) significant figures.
Write all bearings correct to the nearest degree.
1. (a) The diagram below shows two airports A and B. The bearing of B from A is 072°.
What is the bearing of A from B?
(b) The diagram below shows three cellular stations P, Q and R.
237°
(c) From a Port, P, the bearing of a ship, S, is 325°. What is the bearing of P from S?
2. A ship leaves Port X and travels for 100km on a bearing of 142° to another Port Y.
Calculate the distance travelled
(a) in the south direction
The South Direction= 78.8kmS
x
Cos 038°= Cos 038° x 100km= 78.801kmS
100 km
3. The diagram below, not drawn to scale, shows a ships journey. The ship travelled 55km
west and 97 km north from Port J to arrive at Port K. Calculate the bearing on which the
ship travelled.

55 km
Answer= 60.4°
4. A plane leaves Port A and flies 143 km on a bearing of 040° to a Port B. From B it flies
165km on a bearing of 130° to a Port C.
(a) Draw a diagram to represent the information given.
Your diagram should include
(i) the North direction
(ii) the Ports A, B and C
(iii) the bearings of 040° and 130°
(iv) the distances 143km and 165km
(c) Calculate how far the plane is from its starting point.

Answer= 170km
5. A ship, A, is 17km away on a bearing of 234° from a harbor H. Another ship, B, is 10km
away on a bearing of 144° from H.
(a) Draw a diagram to represent the information given.
Label clearly on your diagram
(i) the points A, B and H
(ii) the bearings 234° and 144°
(iii) the distances 17km and 10km
(iv) the North direction
(b) Calculate
(i) the distance AB
