Laboratory Exercise 2
Concept of Energy

INTRODUCTION

Energy is the ability to do work. Work is the transfer of energy in an object that makes a
displacement. We use energy in our daily lives to do things, or even when we are resting. As we
move, we rest, we walk, and in everything, we do we use or possess energy. These energies have
different forms, it can be potential, kinetic, internal, etc. These can be seen in different daily
scenarios in our lives without noticing them.
We need energy in everything that we need. To make the things that we own, it needs the
energy to be produced. But using energy too much harms our lives. It uses a large amount of the
earth’s natural resources that may damage the world. Too much energy usage produces carbon
dioxide emissions. Thus, we need to learn how we will conserve energy.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

1. List the different units of energy and its conversion from one unit to another unit.

2. Research on the internet or textbooks, list and define following energy and write its
appropriate equations (fill-in table 1):
a) Potential energy
b) Kinetic energy
c) Internal energy
d) Work

3. Provide an example of energy conservation as seen in the field of ABE.

RESULTS

1. ENERGY UNITS and CONVERSION

2. Energy definition and equation.
Table 1. Energy and its equations.
Energy Definition Equation
Gravitational Potential is the energy of a body in its 𝑃 = 𝐹ℎ
Energy place, position, or elevation. 𝑚𝑔ℎ
It is the stored energy in a 𝑃=
𝑘
body with respect to its 𝑚𝑔
𝛥𝑃 = 𝑃2 − 𝑃1 ℎ − ℎ1
position. 𝑘 2

Kinetic Energy the stored capacity/energy of 𝑚𝑣 2

a moving body because of its 𝐾=
2𝑘
momentum. An object in 𝑚𝑔 2
𝛥𝐾 = 𝐾2 − 𝐾1 𝑣 − 𝑣12
motion whether in horizontal 2𝑘 2
or vertical motion possesses
kinetic energy.
Internal Energy Internal Energy is the energy 𝛥𝑈 = 𝑈2 − 𝑈1
stored in a substance by the
virtue of the activity and
configuration of its
molecules. This type of
energy is separated in the
scale of macroscopic orders
energy associated with
moving objects.
Work work is the product of force 𝑊 = 𝐹𝑑
and distance made in the 𝑊 = 𝑝𝐴𝑑𝐿
object. It is an energy in 𝑊 = 𝑝𝑑𝑉
transition that exists when it
moves through a distance.

3. Energy conservation as seen in the field of ABE.

Energy usage can be based on the size of the machine that you are using. It can also be based on
the size of the farm that you are working on. We can’t change the size of the farm to minimize
energy usage, but minimizing tractor size can be. An example of energy conservation that can be
seen in the ABE field is the usage of smaller tractors that can do the same job as bigger tractors.
Smaller tractors use smaller amount of fuel than using large tractors, thus is you would only work
on a smaller farm area, using a smaller tractor would help to minimize energy usage. Also, we
must consider the size of the farm that we are working with, we must think of things on where we
would use smaller amount of energy.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION

“Energy is neither created nor destroyed”. This is the first law of conservation energy
formed by Robert Mayer from Einstein’s idea. From that single discovery, several new information
was made.
Energy is divided into two main types: kinetic and potential energy. Kinetic energy is the
energy that is present in a moving body while potential energy is the energy stored in a resting
body. This energy is measured in different units that we use in this world- metric, and English
system. These units vary in measurements but can be converted for the calculations to be accurate.
We must know how to convert units for us to have right and exact calculations when working.
Thus, from the knowledge that I have attained in this activity, I therefore conclude that we
people must know how to convert different units of energy and on how to conserve energy. Unit
conversion is important to have a right calculation while conserving energy will help us to lessen
the usage of the natural resources that the earth has that damages the world if we use to much of
it. Having proper, adequate, and right knowledge about energy can help us to be more
knowledgeable on what we do to help conserve energy.
Guide Questions:

1. Use dimensional analysis and show that the expression 𝑒 = 𝑚𝑐 2 has a unit of energy.
2. In accordance with Einstein’s theory of relativity, calculate the mass of the matter needed
to be destroyed to produce an energy of 1.75 × 1015 𝑊 − ℎ𝑟.
