Case study:
1)Suicide Prevention: -
Maharashtra constituted about 9.4 percent of all Indian population but accounted for
13.5 percent of the total suicide deaths in the country. Suicides accounted for 2
percent of the total deaths in the state whereas at the all-India level suicides
accounted for 1.3 percent of the total deaths. Sahebrao Karpe, the first farmer to end
his life in the State, Karpe, a farmer from drought prone Yavatmal district of
Maharashtra, committed suicide along with his wife and four children on March 19,
1986. A suicide note he left behind said, “It is impossible to survive as a farmer. “The
main reason for farmers’ suicide is a financial crisis. When farmers fail to get a price
for the farm produce which is more than what he has invested, it upsets the
calculations and pushes him into debt trap,

2) Crime:-

The crime branch’s unit 6 busted an interstate child trafficking racket on July 1 and arrested
14 people including seven members of an all-women gang from Mumbai and Delhi. The
gang had been operational for approximately eight years. The accused used to buy and sell
male children, some of whom were barely days old. Members of the gang worked as agents
for egg donors and surrogate mothers, which made it easy for them to find buyers. They
would keep a watch on poor pregnant slum-dwellers and if a boy was born, they would offer
the family anywhere between Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh for the infant. Buyers would pay
between Rs 1.5 – 4.5 lakh for male offspring.
