What is a Cell?
Just like your school is made of bricks, all living things are made of cells. Like bricks, cells are
the building blocks of living things.
• Bricks together form a wall, Walls together form a
classroom, classrooms together form a floor and the
floors form a school or a house.
• Cells together form a tissue, tissues together form an
organ, organs together form as system and systems
together form living things (Animals , humans and
plants|).

Cells are so small that you cannot see them with your eyes. You would need a microscope
in order to see them.
Levels of Organization
● Cells are the smallest unit of life.
● Cells are specialized for certain jobs , each one has a specific job to perform.
● Cells DO NOT work alone -- they depend on each other to function.
● Tissues are groups of similar cells working together to perform a specific job
● Organs are: Groups of different tissues working together to perform a certain job
● Different organs in our bodies have different jobs to do.
Examples: HEART: pumps & circulates blood throughout the body LUNGS: organs
responsible for exchanging gases STOMACH: breaks down food BRAIN: control organ for
entire body

● An organ system: groups of organs working together to perform a specific job

● Examples include: circulatory system, nervous system, digestive system, skeletal system,
Muscular system, digestive system
● If an organ system begins to fail, other organ systems may stop working and the
organism may die.

Organism: (living thing)

● This is the highest level of organization.
● An organism is a collection of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.
● What are some examples of organisms? Humans, cats, dogs, fish, trees, plants
Each of these organs belong to a system that has an important function in our body

Organ
Nervous system Brain Brain is body’s main control
centre. It is protected by the
skull.

Circulatory Heart  Circulatory System is the

system or system by which oxygen and
transport system nutrients reach the body's
cells, and waste materials
are carried away.
 Blood serves as the system of
transport.

Respiratory Lungs  It is the system of the body

system that is responsible for
breathing.
 When we breathe, the lungs
take in oxygen that it needs
and remove carbon dioxide
that it doesn't need.

Digestive system Stomach Human Digestive System is a

group of organs that breaks
down food into soluble
nutrients that can be absorbed
by the body and removes the
unwanted undigested food
out of the body.
Digestive system Liver The liver gets rid of toxins and
helps the body store energy.

Urinary system Kidneys The kidneys filter the soluble

(excretory wastes found in blood and
system) send them out of the body in
urine.
Skeletal system Bones  It protects our vital organs
such as the brain, the heart,
and the lungs.
 It supports the body and
gives us the shape that we
have.
 It allows us to move

Muscular System Muscles  Muscles pull on bones to

help us move.
