MARK : /100 Marks
Answer all the questions.
1. There is a bag filled with 2 blue, 8 red and 2 yellow. Aireen picks a marble out the bag, notes
its colour and replaces it. She then takes another marble from a bag.

(a) Draw a tree diagram to represent the experiment and state the sample space S for the
experiment.

S = {bb, br, by, rb, rr, ry, yb,yr,yy}

(b) What is the probability of:

i. getting 2 reds?

(c) A number from 1 to 20 is chosen at random. What is the probability of choosing;

i. an even number?

= ∴ even number between 1 to 20 = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20

10

(2 marks)

ii. prime number?

= ∴ prime number between 1 to 20 = 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17,19

= 8/20

= 2/5

(3 marks)
2. The probability distribution for random variable X is given in Table 1.

X 0 1 2
1 2 1
P(X=x)
4 4 4
Table 1: Probability distribution for X

(a) Compute the following :

i. Mean and variance

μ = (0x0.25) + (1x0.5) + (2x0.25)

= 0.5+0.5
=1

Var(x) = ∑ x 2p – μ2
= [(02x0.25) + (12x0.5) + (22x0.25)] - 12
= (0.5 + 1) – 12
= 1.5 – 12
= 0.5
(5 marks)

ii. Standard deviation

σ = √ var(x)
= √ 0.5
= 0.707

(2 marks)

iii. E(2X + 24)

E(2X + 24) = 2E(X) + 24

= 2(1) + 24
= 26

(3 marks)
(b) Suppose the scores on an IQ test are normally distributed. If the test has a mean of
100 and a standard deviation of 10, what is the probability that a person who takes
the test will score:

i. between 90 and 110?

P(90 < X < 110) = P(X<110) – P(X<90)

P(90 < X < 110) = 0.84 – 0.16
P(90 < X < 110) = 0.68

∴ the test score will fall between 90 and 110 is 68%

(4 marks)

ii. less than 85?

∴ area probability = 0.0668 = 6.68%

(3 marks)
iii. more than 73?

∴ area probability = 0.9965

= 99.65%

3. The number of people arriving at a coffee shop is a Poisson process with a rate of 2 per 10
minutes.

ii. more than 5 customers arrive between 9 and 9:30 am.

(3 marks)

iii. two or less customers arrive between 10 and 10:30 am.

(4 marks)
(b) A factory produces components of which 1% is defective. The components are packed
in boxes of 10. A box is selected at random.

i. Find the probability that the box contains exactly one defective component.

(3 marks)

ii. Find the probability that there are at least 2 defective components in the box.
