CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Teen curfew laws restrict the hours that juveniles may be on the

streets or in public places at night. A teen curfew is justified in many

cities or municipalities as a simple method to not only reduce

opportunities for teens to commit crimes but also to protect them from

becoming crime victims. Curfews are promoted as beneficial to law

enforcement; they give police additional control over the presence and

behavior of juveniles on the street during curfew hours. They are also

endorsed as a valuable complement to parental supervision; they

provide community support to parents placing limits on the hours that

their children may be out at night (Sutphen & Ford 2001). Any juvenile

caught out after curfew can face a fine or even jail time, depending

upon the specific ordinance of the town.

Various crimes happen in every society. Crimes can be considered

petty such as theft or it can be heinous such as carnapping and

murder. Therefore, in order to prevent the occurrence of crimes, curfew

hour is essential. This is where the role of police and barangay officials

comes in. These organizations are the hands of government in

handling crime prevention in our country.

Curfew laws are designed to prevent crime committed by people

and preventing people from becoming victims of crimes themselves.

People are expected to be off the streets and in their home after a

certain hours of the day. Curfew laws require the assistance of

community members as well as law enforcement for the curfew to be

effective. These law are not just intended to prevent crime or

victimization, but to prevent people from becoming delinquent. To

make them satisfied of what is specific objectives of curfew hour. To

determine what are those rules in implementing curfew hours. Identify

this effect which tells us how much time could be reduced by penalties

or increasing enforcement of curfew ordinance.
