I can use momentum & Impulse formulas:

1. Calculate the momentum of a 1.60 x 103 kg car traveling at 20.0 m/s.

2. How fast is a 1.50 kg ball moving if it has a momentum of 4.50 kg.m/s?

3. A 5.00 kg ball accelerates at a rate of 2.00 m/s2 for 1.50 seconds. Calculate the ball’s
momentum after the acceleration.

4. A force of 20.0 N is applied to a 3.00 kg object for 4.00 seconds. Calculate the impulse
experienced by the object.

5. A 1200 kg car accelerates from rest to 10.0 m/s in a time of 4.50 seconds. Calculate the force
that the car’s tires exerted on the road.

6. A 1.00 kg ball traveling towards a soccer player at a velocity of 5.00 m/s rebounds off the
soccer player’s foot at a velocity of 8.50 m/s. If the time of contact between the ball and the
player’s foot was 2.00 x 10-2 seconds, what was the force that the foot applied on the ball?

𝑚𝛥𝑣⃗ = 𝐹⃗𝑛𝑒𝑡 𝛥𝑡
Goal: I can explain a situation in words using impulse and momentum concepts.
1. Suppose you sling a basketball horizontally while standing on extremely low-friction ice.
You will slide backwards. Will you slide backwards if you go through the motions of throwing
the ball, but hold on to it instead? Explain your reasoning using concepts of impulse and or
momentum.

2. Compare the change in momentum of a 0.10 kg clay blob that strikes a wall at 10.0 m/s and
sticks or a 0.10 kg bouncy ball that strikes the wall at the same speed and bounces away at 6.5 m/s.
Explain your reasoning.

since the material of the bouncy ball is like a spring, as it hits the wall it compresses
and decompresses causing a spring like effect which bounces the ball of the wall.
3. A Japanese flying squid (Todarodes pacificus) of mass 0.50 kg, and a blue whale
(Balaenoptera musculus) of mass 150,000 kg traveling at equal speeds have a head-on collision.
Note that the mass ratio is 300,000/1.
a. Which aquatic organism will experience the greater force of impact? Justify your answer.
the forces experienced by the creatures will be the same because of newton's third law that every action has an equal and opposite reaction

b. Which denizen of the deep will experience the greater change in momentum? Justify your
answer.

since a greater change in velocity will result in a greater change in momentum, the squid will experience a greater change in velocity
The squid will have a greater velocity after collision because it is lighter

c. Which saltwater swimmer will experience the greater acceleration? Justify your answer.
since acceleration is change in velocity, the squid will experience a greater change in velocity therefore, it will also experience the greatest
acceleration

4. Discuss the following in terms of impulse and momentum:

a. Vintage cars often have wooden or metal surfaces on the dash. Why do modern cars have
padding on their dashes? (Think about stopping an unrestrained person in an automobile
accident.) Because if the person's head hits the dashboard, the padding will increase the time before and impact, causing
a greater impulse so the person won't hit the dashboard with as much momentum

b. Stretchy ropes are safer in case of a mountaineering fall than a stiff rope. Explain.
while falling when attached to a stretchy rope, the rope will stretch past its initial length causing there to be an increase in time overall
increasing the impulse, and since the impulse increased the momentum will decrease

c. A freight train can consist of a long line of very heavy train cars. Explain why the driver of the
locomotive starts out by backing up before going forward. Hint: the couplings have some space
between them.
the train isn't able to start at once, so it backs up to decrease the space between the couplings this decreases the time it takes
between cars which allows the train to gain more momentum before moving
