II B.Tech (Chemical Engineering) II Semester

2021-22

CH252 HEAT TRANSFER (4 Credits)

Overview

Process Industries involve many operations where heating of cold fluids and cooling of hot
fluids is required. These are carried out in various types of heat transfer equipment. This
course introduces the basics of Heat Transfer and covers all the aspects so that the student can
carry out the design of the new equipment and analyze the existing ones. The knowledge of
Fluid Mechanics is essential for the course. This course also forms a prerequisite for the
course Process Equipment Design.

Course Outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to
CO1 Identify the modes of heat transfer.
CO2 Calculate heat transfer coefficients for forced and natural convection.
CO3 Perform heat transfer calculations involving phase changes.
CO4 Analyze the heat exchanger performance for co-current and counter-current flows.
CO5 Design double pipe and shell & tube heat exchangers.
