CLASS SUMMARY

Heat Transfer in the building

 Conduction- It is the movement of heat energy through the
molecules. Conduction is the process by which heat energy is
transmitted through collisions between neighboring atoms or
molecules. Vibrating molecules collide with their neighboring
molecules, making them also vibrate faster. As these molecules
collide, thermal energy is transferred via conduction to the rest of
the pan.
 Convection- This is the transfer of heat through a solid. Natural
convection occurs as air is heated: it expands, rises, and is replaced
by cooler air.
 Radiation- This is a process where energy is radiated through the
air by means of electromagnetic radiation. Although effective for
high temperature sources such as the sun, it’s less effective at
ambient temperatures on earth.
While conduction is the transfer of heat energy by direct
contact, convection is the movement of heat by actual motion
of matter; radiation is the transfer of energy with the help of
electromagnetic waves.

Insulators, Properties and Uses

Thermal insulation is the reduction of heat transfer between
objects in thermal contact or in range of radiative influence.
S.No. INSULATOR PROPERTIES
1 Fiberglass 1. Non flammable
2. R Values R 2.9- to R3.8
per inch.
2 Cellulose 1. Eco friendly
2. R values range from
R3.1- R3.7
3 Mineral Wool 1. Non flammable
2. Environment friendly
3. R values ranging from
R 2.8 to R 3.5
4 Polyesterene 1. Smooth surface

3. Flammable
4. R value of R-5.5

Time Lag
Time Lag- The time delay due to the thermal mass is known as a time
lag. The thicker and more resistive the material, the longer it will
take for heat waves to pass through.
Decrement value- The reduction in cyclical temperature on the inside
surface compared to the outside surface is knows and the decrement.
