REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

The reproductive system is essential

to keep a species alive, but it is not
essential to keep an individual alive.

Two types of sex cells or gametes are

involved in the process of human
reproduction. The male gamete or
sperm and the female gamete or
egg. When a sperm fertilizes an egg,
this fertilized egg is called a zygote.
The zygote develops into a fetus.

Function:

• The main functions of the female

reproductive system are:

• hormone production for the

maintenance of female sexual
characteristics.

• allow fertilization.

• allow gestation and allow childbirth.

IT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS: THE EXTERNAL
AND INTERNAL GENITALIA:
The internal genitalia are made up of: The external genitalia are made up of:

• The Vagina: it is a conduit that connects the uterus
with the outside, that is, with the vulva, it is also
where the baby comes out at birth.
• The Uterus: It is lined by a membrane called the
endometrium, which is a tissue specially prepared
for the protection and nesting of the baby. Its most
important function is to protect the embryo.
• The Fallopian Tubes: extend from the upper part
of the uterus to the ovaries. Fertilization occurs in
it.
• The Vulva: is the outermost part of the
reproductive system.
• Clitoris: It is the most innervated organ of the
female genitalia, and its only apparent function is
to provide pleasure to women.
• The Labia Minora And Majora: are protruding
folds that border the vulva and are part of the
structures of the reproductive system.

• The Ovaries: they are two small glands located one

on each side of the uterus, their function is to
store the ovules until they mature.

Function

The male reproductive system is

responsible for ensuring the
reproduction of male sex.

It is made up of internal and external

organs that are:
 THE EXTERNAL GENITALIA ARE MADE UP OF:
• The Testicles: are the main organs of the male reproductive system. They produce
sperm cells and male sex hormones.

• Penis: is the male copulatory organ, which is also involved in urinary excretion.
Inside the penis runs the urethra, one of whose functions is to deposit sperm
during intercourse, and thereby achieve fertilization of the woman's egg.

• Deferent Ducts: The vas deferens are a pair of ducts surrounded by smooth
muscle, each approximately 30 cm long, that connect the epididymis with the
ejaculatory ducts, intermediate the path of semen.

• The Corpus Spongiosum: is the smallest of the three columns of erectile tissue
found inside the penis.

• Corpus Cavernosum: The corpora cavernosa are a pair of columns of erectile tissue
located at the top of the penis that fill with blood during erection.
Prostate: The prostate is a glandular organ of the genitourinary system,
exclusive to men, chestnut-shaped, located in front of the rectum, below
and at the exit of the urinary bladder. It contains cells that produce part
of the seminal fluid that protects and nourishes the sperm contained in
semen.

Urethra: The urethra is the tube through which urine flows from the
urinary bladder to the outside of the body during urination.

Bulbourethral Glands: Its function is to secrete an alkaline fluid that

lubricates and neutralizes the acidity of the urethra before the passage of

Ejaculatory Duct: each male has two of them. They begin at the end of

the vas deferens and end at the urethra. During ejaculation, the semen
passes through these ducts and is later expelled through the urethra that
runs through the penis and empties out through the urinary meatus.

The seminal vesicles secrete a viscous alkaline fluid that neutralizes the
acidic environment of the urethra. Under normal conditions this liquid
represents around 40% of the semen.
