How We Use Energy

• Residential sector - includes homes and apartments.

•Commercial sector - includes offices, malls, stores, schools, hospitals,
hotels, warehouses, restaurants, and places of worship and public
assembly.
•Industrial Sector - includes facilities and equipment used for
manufacturing, agriculture, mining, and construction.
•Transportation Sector - includes vehicles that transport people or
goods, such as cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, trains, aircraft, boats,
barges, and ships
Sustainability

“meeting the needs of the present

without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own
needs”
United Nations’ Brundtland Commission of 1987
Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and
modern energy for all
● Energy is central to every major challenge and
opportunity.
● Sustainable energy transforms lives, economies and the
planet.
Targets:
● By 2030, ensure universal access to affordable, reliable
and modern energy services
● By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable
energy in the global energy mix
● By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy
efficiency
● By 2030, enhance international cooperation to facilitate
access to clean energy research and technology
● By 2030, expand infrastructure and upgrade technology
for supplying modern and sustainable energy services
THE IMPORTANCE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY

Renewable energies are sources of clean, inexhaustible and increasingly competitive

energy. They differ from fossil fuels principally in their diversity, abundance and
potential for use anywhere on the planet, but above all in that they produce neither
greenhouse gases – which cause climate change – nor polluting emissions. Their costs
are also falling and at a sustainable rate, whereas the general cost trend for fossil fuels
is in the opposite direction in spite of their present volatility.

CLEAN ENERGY TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE

Clean energy development is vital for combating climate change and limiting its most
devastating effects. 2019 was the second warmest year on record. The Earth’s
temperature has risen by an average 0.85 °C since the end of the 19th Century, states
National Geographic in its special November 2015 issue on climate change.
Meanwhile, some 1.1 billion inhabitants (17% of the world population) do not have access
to electricity. Equally, 2.7 billion people (38% of the population) use conventional biomass
for cooking, heating and lighting in their homes - at serious risk to their health.
