PRACTICAL # 8

AIM:- Configure web browser security settings.

Optimizing your browser’s settings is a critical step in using the Internet securely and privately. Today’s
popular browsers include built-in security features, but users often fail to optimize their browser’s security
settings on installation. Failing to correctly set up your browser’s security features can put you at a higher risk
for malware infections and malicious attacks. Following are the steps for securing several of today’s most
popular browsers, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

 SECURE BROWSING WITH GOOGLE CHROME


1. On your computer, open Google Chrome.
2. At the top right, click
3. Go to Settings.
4. Under "Privacy and security", choose what settings to turn off.
 To control how Chrome handles content and permissions for a site, click Site settings.
 To delete information from your browsing activity, like your history, cookies, or saved
passwords, click Clear browsing data.
 To control how Chrome handles cookies and tracking, click Cookies and other site data.
 To manage safe browsing and protection, click Security.
5. Turn off sync.

 SECURE BROWSING WITH MICROSOFT EDGE
1. Open a Microsoft Edge web browser.
2. On the top right corner of the window, click (…) to open the menu.
3. Go to settings.
4. Under "Privacy, search and services", choose what settings to turn off.
 Tracking protection: make sure it's turned on. Choose from three modes: Basic,
Balanced and Strict.
 Clear browsing data.
 Send “do not track” requests.
 Required or optional diagnostic data to keep the browser secure, up to date and performing as
expected.
 Manage security settings such as:
 Manage certificates.
 Manage defender Smartscreen: It is a feature in Microsoft Edge that helps detect phishing
websites. SmartScreen Filter can also help protect you from downloading or installing
malware (malicious software).
 Block potentially unwanted apps.
 Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites.
 Use web services to improve browsing experiences.
5. Under Cookies & Site Permissions:
 Manage and delete cookies and site data.
 Set site permissions:
 Allow or block pop-ups, redirects and ads.
 Allow Javascript: It is always enabled and cannot be disabled.
 Location, Camera, Microphone, Light sensors, Auto download, Images, Notifications,
Background sync, USB devices, Serial Ports, File editing, Protected content, Virtual reality,
Augmented reality, Payment Handlers.
6. Turn off sync.

 SECURE BROWSING WITH MOZILLA FIREFOX
1. On your computer, open Mozilla Firefox.
2. At the top right, click .
3. Go to Settings.
4. Under "Privacy and security", choose what settings to turn off.
 Setting Enhanced Tracking Protection- Standard, strict or custom.
 Enable ‘Do not track’ signal.
 Manage Cookies and Site data.
 Manage Login and Password Credentials.
 Clearing History.
 Suggest while using Address bar.
 Access or block permission to location, camera, microphone, etc.
 Block pop-ups.
 Warning while installing add-ons.
 Allow or block firefox data collection and use.
 Block dangerous contents while downloading.
 Warning against unwanted and uncommon software.
 Validate Certificates.
 Enable or don’t enable HTTP-Only mode.
5. Turn off sync.

 SECURE BROWSING WITH MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER
The Internet Explorer 11 will be retired and go out of support soon. The same Internet
Explorer 11 apps and sites can be open in Microsoft Edge with Internet Explorer mode.
1. On your computer, open Internet Explorer.
2. At the top right, click tools .
3. Go to Internet Options.
4. Under General tab: Delete browsing history.
5. Click on Security tab: Select zone from internet, Local intranet, Trusted Sites and Restricted Sites to
view or change security settings.
6. Under Privacy tab:
 Manage the sites.
 Choose how to handle cookies- Always allow session cookies.
 Never allow website to request the location.
 Turn on or off the Pop-Up blocker.
 Disable toolbars and extensions when InPrivate Browsing starts.
7. Under Content tab: Use certificates for encrypted connections and identifications.
8. Under Program tab: Enable or disable browser add-ons installed in the system.
9. Under Advanced tab: Enable or disable the required settings if the browser is in unusable condition.
