Moreover, the poem was trying to tell us that we should not follow on how gender organizes our
world into pink or blue. Most of us naturally fit into our gender roles as we grow up. Girls play
with dolls and wear dresses. For males, It's all about trucks and pants.” But I believe it is more
than that because it is a fascinating blend of biological, psychological, and sociological features.
Gender Identity is one of the basic ideas that I found in the poem. It talks about how you
experience your gender, despite what society expects. The second idea is about gender roles
because in the poem there is a line "Now girls must use makeup, girl’s names and girl’s
clothes And boys must use sneakers, but not pantyhose The grownups will teach you the
rules to their dance And if you got confused, they’ll say “Look in your pants” " which means
that gender roles are social conventions that should be followed by everyone in the community.
It's like cooking, shopping, gardening, and dancing are all considered female activities by
society, and working for a living and singing are both manly activities. However, for some, this
is not the case. The third idea is Gender expression because according to the poem, you are the
one who will choose to express your gender identity through your name, pronouns, clothing,
hairstyle, behavior, voice, or body features.
In conclusion, the poem serves as an instrument for those people who are afraid to show who
they are. It shows that gender is more than knowing your genitals. In the poem, there's a line "
Let’s all be abnormal and act like ourselves" which means that being mindful of your differences
will lead you in concentrating on utilizing your strengths and overcoming your flaws while being
true to your distinct identity. Because your method of expressing yourself and accomplishing
things is unique, learning to hone your intrinsic abilities can lead to incredible results. And lastly,
we should make an effort to find ourselves because learning to be yourself is essential to our
personal development.
