GRAMMAR
THE CAUSATIVES:
We use causative verbs to show that someone or something causes something to happen.
Causative verbs commonly used are: have and get in both active and passive form.
- Active form is used when we want to mention the person who does the action.
S + have + O (person) + V0 + O
S + get + O (person) + to V0 + O
Example
 The teacher had the students write a test.
 I’ll get my assistant to call you with the details.
 I had the handyman fix the leak.
 Did you get the electrician to repair the TV?
- Passive form is used when we do not want to mention the person who does the action.
S+ have/get + O (thing) + V3/ed
Example
 He had/got his hair cut.
 She didn’t have/get her teeth checked.
 I had/got the leak in the roof fixed.
 Did you have/get the TV repaired?
Besides, there are other causative verbs used in different shades to express. They can be make, let,
help, ask, allow, permit, force, and require.

Exercise 2: Put the verbs in brackets in the correct causative forms (active or passive) with GET/HAVE
to complete the following sentences.
1. We’re getting a new house __________built________. (build)

Exercise 3: Rewrite the sentences, using the active causative with GET/HAVE.
Example

8. The computer categorized images under the direction of the lead researcher of the project.

Exercise 4: Make sentences using all the information and the verb given. Change the word form, and
add more words, if necessary. Use the passive causative form with GET/HAVE.
