INTRODUCTION

The research carried out has the objective of deepening the knowledge of
American culture and analyzing specific aspects of the American way of life, as
well as putting into practice the acquired learning in the subject.

The work is considered of great importance, since with its preparation I was able to
strengthen my knowledge in the English area and I am better able to use it
correctly.

The work has been elaborated in a single chapter, where everything is detailed
about American culture, indicating its language, its gastronomy, music, sport and
other aspects.

3
AMERICAN CULTURE

The culture of the United States of America is primarily Western, but is influenced
by African, Native American, Asian, Polynesian, and Latin American cultures.

It also has its own social and cultural characteristics, such as dialect, music, arts,
social habits, cuisine, and style folklore. The United States of America is an
ethnically and racially diverse country as a result of large-scale migration from
many countries throughout its history.

An American culture includes conservative and liberal elements, scientific and

religious competitiveness, political structures, risk taking and frees expression,
materialist and moral elements.

THE LANGUAGE

Although the United States has no official language at the federal level, 28 states
have passed legislation making English the official language and it is considered to
be the de facto national language. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, more than
97% of Americans can speak English well, and for 81% it is the only language
spoken at home. Spanish has official status in the commonwealth of Puerto Rico
and the state of New Mexico; Spanish is the primary spoken language in Puerto
Rico and various smaller linguistic enclaves.

THE AMERICAN FOOD

American cuisine was influenced by Europeans and Native Americans in its early
history. Today, there are a number of foods that are commonly identified as
American, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, potato chips, macaroni and cheese, and

4
meat loaf. "As American as apple pie" has come to mean something that is
authentically American.

In the United States there are also styles of cooking and types of foods that are
specific to a region. Southern-style cooking is often called "American comfort food"
and includes dishes such as fried chicken, collard greens, black-eyed peas and
corn bread.

Early Native Americans utilized a number of cooking methods in early American

Cuisine that have been blended with early European cooking methods to form the
basis of American Cuisine. When the colonists came to the colonies, they farmed
animals for clothing and meat in a similar fashion to what they had done in Europe.
They had cuisine similar to their previous British cuisine. The American colonial
diet varied depending on the settled region in which someone lived. Commonly
hunted game included deer, bear, buffalo, and wild turkey. A number of fats and
oils made from animals served to cook much of the colonial foods. Prior to the
Revolution, New Englanders consumed large quantities of rum and beer, as
maritime trade provided them relatively easy access to the goods needed to
produce these items: rum was the distilled spirit of choice, as the main ingredient,
molasses, was readily available from trade with the West Indies. In comparison to
the northern colonies, the southern colonies were quite diverse in their agricultural
diet and did not have a central region of culture.

THE MUSIC
In the United States the music styles and influences (as rock and roll, jazz, rock,
techno, soul, country, hip-hop, blues) and music based on them can be heard all
over the world. Music in the U.S. is diverse. It includes African-American influence
in the 20th century. The first half of this century is famous for jazz, introduced by
African-Americans.

5
SPORTS
The United States is a sports-minded country, with millions of fans who follow
football, baseball, basketball and hockey, among other sports. The Baseball, which
was developed in colonial America and became an organized sport in the mid-
1800s, is known as America's favorite pastime, although its popularity has been
eclipsed by football for the past three decades, according to the Harris Poll.

AMERICAN HOLIDAYS
Many holidays are celebrated only in the United States. Americans celebrate their
independence from Britain on July 4. Memorial Day, celebrated on the last Monday
in May, honors those who have died in military service. Labor Day, observed on
the first Monday in September, celebrates the country's workforce. Thanksgiving,
another distinctive American holiday, falls on the fourth Thursday in November and
dates back to colonial times to celebrate the harvest. Presidents' Day, marking the
birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, is a federal holiday that
occurs on the third Monday in February. The contributions of veterans are honored
on Veterans' Day, observed on Nov. 11.

THE RELIGION

The participation in organized religion has been diminishing, the public life person
and popular culture of the United States incorporates many Christian ideals
specifically about redemption, salvation, conscience, and morality. Nearly every
known religion is practiced in the United States, which was founded on the basis of
religious freedom.

6
CONCLUSION

With the development of this research I have learned many things about
Americans.

I learned that the culture of the United States of America is primarily Western, but it
is influenced by African, Native American, Asian, Polynesian, and Latin American
cultures.

Another important thing I learned is that this country is beautiful so we must

continue to inquire more about it so as to talk to people about this wonderful
country.
