1.1 Activation
Lee cuidadosamente el siguiente párrafo acerca de la contaminación atmosférica ambiental
(contaminantes primarios y secundarios) y responde las preguntas que se te presentan.

Ambient Air Pollution

Pollutants are categorized into two types: primary and secondary. Primary pollutants are
directly emitted from the source and secondary pollutants form when primary pollutants
chemically react in the atmosphere. O3 is a good example of a secondary pollutant because
it is formed when volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides (NOx), precursors
produced from motor vehicles and industrial sources, react in the presence of sunlight.
Owing to the nature of its production, O3 has a diurnal profile with rise in the morning after
heavy traffic and peak in the 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. period. In the evening, scavenging of
O3 by nitric oxide (NO) titration in areas with heavy traffic reduces O3 to much lower
levels, compared to daytime highs. High O3 levels may occur in downwind communities
later in the afternoon and evening, stemming from airborne transport to areas without heavy
traffic. O3 is a powerful oxidant and respiratory tract irritant in adults and children causing
a number of symptoms including shortness of breath, chest pain, etc., when inhaling deeply.

What are the two types of pollutants?

a) First and second
b) Main and secondary
c) Primary and secondary

It is a secondary pollutant that causes a number of symptoms such as: shortness of breath,
chest pain, etc., when inhaling deeply.
a) 3O
b) O3
c) Chemicals

1.2 Presentation
Lee el párrafo y observa cuidadosamente la figura a continuación que muestra los
contaminantes primarios y secundarios en el medio ambiente.

There are two categories of outdoor air pollutants: Primary pollutants and Secondary
pollutants. Primary
pollutants are chemicals that have been added directly to the air by natural events or human
activities and occurs in a harmful concentration. Several examples of Primary pollutants
include soot and carbon monoxide, both which are emitted by smoke in factories.
Secondary pollutants are harmful chemicals formed in the atmosphere when a primary
pollutant reacts with normal air components or other air pollutants. Examples of Secondary
pollutants would be Peroxyacyl Nitrates (PANS), Sulfur Trioxide (SO3), and Ozone (O3).
All of these have a negative effect on the environment.
1.3 Practice

Across:
1. The air, land, and water where people, Down:
animals, 1. The gases around the earth.
and plants live. 2. Causing damage or injury.
2. Substances that pollute. 3. Coming after something else.
4. The mixture of gases around the earth
3. Most important. that we breathe.
4. A change or result that is caused by 5. The grey or black gas that is made
something. when something burns
6. Artificial substances made using
chemistry

1.4 Production
Ilustra en tu cuaderno o computadora 4 ejemplos de tipos de contaminación del medio
ambiente y explica brevemente cómo afectan a tu comunidad o ciudad.

Noise pollution.

Noise pollution is one of the pollutants that most

affects communities in urban areas since excessive
noise from cars and different media affects the
hearing health of many people.

Air pollution.

Gas emissions from automobiles, industrial factories

and garbage burning and fires affect all human
beings as the planet deteriorates and also causes
people to suffer from respiratory problems.

Water pollution.

Water pollution is one of the most alarming factors

since it reduces the number of rivers and the
possibility of having access to water in some
communities.

Soil pollution.

Soil pollution affects all communities since it is a

degradation of the quality of the soil and affects
people in various ways due to the concentration of
chemical compounds and wastes.
