LESSON
4
Pollution

Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

 Identify the impacts humans have on the environment;

 Describe the different types of pollution; &
 Explain the effects of pollution in the environment.

Introduction:
Hello, how are you? Hope you are doing good! Welcome to Lesson 4
of Module 2. In this lesson, you are about to learn the impacts humans have on the
environment. Moreover, there are some tasks that you need to accomplish so that
you will grasp the gist of this topic.
So are you ready? Alright, let’s begin!

Activity:

List at least THREE (3) human activities that can cause different pollution and
identify what kind of pollution it produces. Write your answers to the
designated columns.

HUMAN ACTIVITY TYPE OF POLLUTION

TRANSPORTATION AIR POLLUTION

EXCESSIVE USE OF LIGHT LIGHT POLLUTION

INDUSTRIAL WASTE, DUMPING WATER POLLUTION

Analysis:

From your given answers, pick one (1) human activity that you
think gave the biggest impact in contributing pollution. How?
Explain your answer in two to three sentences.

One of the human activities that gave a big impact to the environment is
Transportation. Automobiles are being created by many industries, that impacts the
whole environment through producing air pollution, Noise pollution, and traffic
congestion that causes pollution to the roads as well as release harmful gases. In
conclusion, transportation, particularly through automobiles, stands as a major
contributor to environmental degradation. The widespread production and use of
Automobiles by various industries have resulted in all of those pollution of which
adversely affect the environment. Addressing these issues requires collective efforts
to adopt cleaner transportation alternatives and implement sustainable practices to
mitigate the negative impacts on our planet.

Abstraction:

Humans play a significant role in the changes in the environment. Few of the
human activities that create an impact in our environment are: overpopulation,
pollution, burning fossil fuels, and deforestation are few of the impact of human
activities.

Figure 4.1 Human Activities that Causes Pollution

The introduction of harmful materials into the environment is called
pollution, and the harmful elements that causes it are what we call pollutants. These
pollutants can either be natural or created through human activities (Figure 4.1).
There are different types of pollution, these are: air pollution, water pollution, soil
pollution, light pollution and noise pollution (Figure 4.2).
Types of Pollution

Figure 4.2 Types of Pollution

Figure 4.3 Different Types of Pollution and its Major Sources

PRIMARY POLLUTANT versus SECONDARY POLLUTANT

Primary pollutants cause pollution by their direct release into the

environment. Example of primary pollutants ammonia, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen
dioxide and carbon monoxide. While secondary pollutants form when primary
pollutants emitted directly from a combustion process react in the atmosphere.
Example of these are, ground-level ozone, acid rain, and nutrient enrichment
compounds.
What are the effects of pollution?

Pollution have various effect on the environment and different organisms

living on it. Each type of pollution has different effects on the environment, people
and other organisms.

 Air Pollution = Causes multiple diseases to humans. It also causes a

variety of environmental effects, such as acid rain, haze,
eutrophication, intoxication of wild life and more.
 Water Pollution = Contaminated water kills various organisms,
including humans. Harm to any of these organisms can create a chain
effect, imperiling the entire environments.
 Soil Pollution = Soil contaminants can cause various diseases to
humans and other organisms. It also has a huge impact in plant
production since it decreases the nutrients in the soil.
 Light Pollution = Unnecessary or excessive lights at night alters and
interferes with the timing of necessary biological activities of humans
and animals. Artificial lights disrupt this nocturnal activity, interfering
with reproduction and reducing populations.
 Noise Pollution = Hearing impairment and sleep problems are few of
the effects of noise pollution in humans. It also alters the behavior of
the different animals because of the unwanted or excessive noise.

Application:

Provide a possible solution for every type of pollution. Explain how

each of the possible solution can solve the problem.
POLLUTION SOLUTION
Transportation options that are not dependent on fossil fuels,
AIR such as bicycles, and reduce the use of cars. If feasible,
walk when the destination is nearby, and practice reusing
and recycling materials do not burn.
Dispose of waste properly, particularly those harmful to
WATER bodies of water, such as chemical waste that can pollute the
water.
Decrease the use of toxic fertilizers, pesticides, and
SOIL insecticides, and employ organic manure and organic
farming methods.

Turn off the lights when not in use, and reduce their usage
LIGHT when they are not necessary, such as in the daytime.

Control noise levels through the use of barriers to block

NOISE noise, or by lowering the volume and using noise-canceling
when around machinery.

Assessment:

Modified TRUE OR FALSE. Write the word TRUE is the underlined word
fits the statement. If NOT, provide the correct answer.

TRUE 1. Pollutants are the harmful elements that causes pollution.

TRUE 2. Humans cause pollution.

Primary pollutant 3. Secondary pollutant cause pollution by their direct release

into the environment.

Soil pollution 4. Improper disposals of toxic waste in vacant lots is a major

cause water pollution.

TRUE 5. Pollution can only be created through human activities
