Population and Pollution - The Relation
Pollution is a global problem of today. it has reached
the most alarming stage. It is proving a great danger
for all the living creatures. It has not very long
history but the list of its kinds and bad effects is
quite lengthy. But we should also keep in mind that
man himself is the main cause of this curse. He has
brought humanity face to face with this giant Population around the world is growing rapidly each
problem. year, which is unfortunately causing negative
impacts on the environment. Each day the air around
us is becoming more polluted as the amount of
carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere caused by
human activities increases each day. As population
continues to gradually increase, it is causing harmful
effects in terms of air pollution. An increase in the
number of people directly varies with the pollution
that is emitted into the environment
The different
types of pollution
around us.
1. Air Pollution
Earlier the air we breathe in use to be pure and
fresh. But, due to increasing industrialization and
concentration of poisonous gases in the environment
the air is getting more and more toxic day by day.

Its causes include burning of fossil fuel and firewood,

smoke released from factories, volcanic eruptions,
forest fires, bombardment, asteroids, CFCs
(Chlorofluorocarbons), carbon oxides and many
more.
2. Water Pollution
Water pollution is said to occur when toxic pollutants
and particulate matter are introduced into water
bodies such as lakes, rivers and seas. These
contaminants are generally introduced by human
activities like improper sewage treatment and oil
spills.

The effects of water pollution are very pronounced in

our environment. Furthermore, toxic chemicals can
bioaccumulate in living beings, and these chemicals
can travel their way up the food chain, ultimately
reaching humans.
3. Soil Pollution
Soil pollution, also called soil contamination, refers to
the degradation of land due to the presence of
chemicals or other man-made substances in the soil.
The xenobiotic substances alter the natural
composition of soil and affect it negatively. These can
drastically impact life directly or indirectly.

The effects of soil pollution are numerous. Specific

wastes, such as radioactive waste become
particularly hazardous when they are not
well-contained. A well-documented example is a
nuclear accident in Chernobyl, which has left an area
of 2,600 km2 uninhabitable for several thousand
years.
4. Noise Pollution

Noise pollution refers to the excessive amount of

noise in the surrounding that disrupts the natural
balance. Usually, it is man-made, though certain
natural calamities like volcanoes can contribute to
noise pollution.
Noise pollution has now become very common due to
In general, any sound which is over 85 decibels is dense urbanisation and industrialisation. Noise
considered to be detrimental. Also, the duration an pollution can bring about adverse effects such as :
individual is exposed plays an impact on their health.
● Hearing loss
● Tinnitus
● Sleeping disorders
● Hypertension (high BP)
● Communication problems
5 simple ways,
you can help the
environment
everyday
Replace disposable items with reusable
Anything you use and throw away can potentially spend centuries in a landfill. See below for simple
adjustments you can make to decrease the amount of disposable items in your daily life.

1. Carry your own reusable cup or water bottle

2. Use airtight, reusable food containers instead of sandwich bags and plastic wrap
3. Pack a waste-free lunch: carry your utensils, cloth napkin, and containers in a reusable lunch bag
4. Bring your own bags to the grocery store
5. Consider buying bulk containers of your preferred beverages and refilling a reusable bottle, instead of
buying individually packaged drinks
Pass on paper

We are living in the Digital Era, but think about all the paper products you use in your daily life. These
actions still align with reusing and repurposing, though may take a little more time for transition.

1. Join a library instead of buying books or buy a Kindle

2. Print as little as possible; and if you must, print on both sides
3. Wrap gifts in fabric and tie with ribbon; both are reusable and prettier than paper and sticky-tape
4. Stop using paper towels and incorporate washable cloths
5. Look at labels to make sure you only use FSC-certified wood and paper products
Conserve water & electricity
The tips you see below will seem like no-brainers; however, it may take to become more aware of your
unconscious habits.

1. Turn the sink water off when brushing your teeth

2. Water the lawn in the morning or evening; cooler air causes less evaporation
3. Switch off anything that uses electricity when not in use (lights, televisions, computers, printers, etc.)
4. Unplug devices when possible; even when an appliance is turned off, it may still use power
5. Remove chemicals inside of the house; research companies that use plant-derived ingredients for their
household cleaning products
Support local & environmentally friendly
Here are a few reasons to start buying local:

1. Reduces plastic and paper waste

2. Boosts cost-efficiency
3. Enables bulk purchasing
4. Helps support your neighbors
5. Retains farmland within the community
Recycle (& then recycle properly)
Implementing recycling habits into your daily life is one of the most effective ways to help lessen
landfill waste, conserve natural resources, save habitats, reduce pollution, cut down on energy
consumption, and slow down global warming.

1. Confirm you are using the proper separation containers for your household per the local
recycling services
2. Remember to make sure your trash bags are recycled or biodegradable, and always cut up the
plastic rings from packs of beer or soda to prevent wildlife from getting caught
3. Educate yourself about what can and cannot be recycled, as not all plastic and cardboard is
acceptable (like pizza boxes for example, due to the grease)
