IV. Learning “The Voice of the Mountain”


Content/s

Concept The voice of the mountains gives or shows us lessons in life, that whatever we give to others, that's
what other people will give back to us.
If you do good, you will receive goodness in return.
If you give love away, you get love back.
If you speaks ill about others, that's what you gonna get in return.
Sounds like the Golden Rule that says "Do unto others whatever you want others do unto you."

DRRE apply prior knowledge when untoward disaster or natural calamity hits.

V. Learning Experiences (5 Es)


Engage A. PICTURE PERFECT 2.0            
In this activity, the teacher will group the class into four. She will then
give different situations to the students. The students' task is to
perform the given situations with their groups. If the situation is
given, they will be given 1 minute to brainstorm with their groups
and portray, when the teacher says FREEZE, each group must not
move and will have their best picture of the situation. The situation
has something related to the story "The Voice of the Mountain". The
group who portrays the best picture will be the winner and will earn
5 points each winning.

Situation 3: flat cakes- Answer varies
Situation 4: calm volcano - Answer varies
 
B. Think-Pair-Share
Questions:
1. What have you observed in the following situations given?  
Possible Answer: It talks about volcano and its activities. It also talks about the conflict of
nature and man.  
2. In situation 2, you portrayed a volcanic activity, why do you think volcanoes erupt?
How are you going to relate it to our lives?
Volcanoes erupt when molten rock called magma rises to the surface. In connection to our
lives, volcanoes are nature's beauty wherein because of the lack of care of people, it somehow
explodes and it revenges and gives back on what people have given. (Answer varies)
3. What should people do so nature won't take revenge?  
People must not harm nature so it won't harm them back. (Answer varies)

Using the same group, the teacher will divide the story into four. Each group will be given 3
minutes to read and understand the story. After which, each group must send 1 representative
to go to different groups and listen to the explanation of the remaining people about the story.
They will be given 2 minutes to do it. Right next, the representatives must go
back to their original groups and discussed the story that they got from the other groups to the
rest of the members. They will be given 5 minutes to discuss the story and digest it.

B. CHARACTER ANALYSIS/ SYMBOLISM


In this activity with the same group, the students will be given pictures of the characters in the
story and analyze them. They will be give 2 minutes to analyze and the 3 minutes for the
presentation.
Group 1-Popocatepetl

Possible Answer: Propocatepetl is the mountain. His character symbolizes kindness but was
betrayed at the end and so he rages.
Group 2 - Eagle
 

Possible Answe: The one who recommended the Little Animal with Two arms,two legs , a head
and a brave air
and a brave air. The eagle symbolizes a helping friend.
Group 3- The little animal

Possible Answer: The one who promised to help Popocatepetl make wings so he can go and
find food to aid his hunger. The monkey symbolizes betrayal and dishonesty.
Group 4- The King

Possible Answer: The King is the one who orders Popocatepl to not move at all because he
might make a great hole in the land whenever he steps. The King symbolizes a ruler who has a
a power to make commands and orders to his people. He also symbolizes a good leader.
Explain POST AND EMPHASIZE
ASK:
1. Who are the characters in the story?Let's count them.
Answer: Popocatepetl, The King, The Eagle and The little animal
2. What does each word represent in the story?
a. white mantle-snow -covered peak mountains
b. flat cakes- small islands
c. Popocatepetl's hunger- calm volcano
d. Popocatepetl's rage- volcanic activity
e.The little animals's dwelling- residential neighborhoods near Popocatepetl
f. Popocatepetl's howling- minor volcanic activity
3. How do the little animals respond to Popocatepetl's request for food?
Possible Answer: The little creatures did not respond to Popocatepetls request for food instead
they ignore his pleas and instead leave in Popocatepetl's place. In a way, the little creatures
betrayed Popocatepetl because they promised to help him but they never did.

4. What does the litlle animal promise to Popocatepetl? Does he keep his promise?
Possible Answer: The little animal promised him to make a pair of wings so he can fly and
look for food. Yet, the little animal didn’t keep his promise yet betrayed him.
5. Why do you think the little animal made a promise?
Possible Answer: The little animal made a promise because he wants something in
return.
6. How does Popocatepetl react with to the little animal's broken promise? How did he
express his anger?
Possible Answer: Sometimes when the thunderous voice of the old peak rolls and rolls, if you
know that tongue, you can hear him say: "Oh, traitor! Traitor! Traitor! Where are my wings? My
wings, traitor! I am hungry! Where are my wings?"Popocatepetl expresses its anger through
eruptions and raging.

Explain: Symbolically, Popocatepetl is the nature, we experience its calamities and harshness
because we are cruel to it. We do not fulfill our promise as its stewards and caretakers.

7. How can you relate to the story to your everyday experience? Give specific situation.

9. What is the moral of the story?
Possible Answer: The moral lesson of the story The Voice of the Mountain , is that you should
never easily trust strangers just because somebody else said good words about them.
Elaborate VISUALIZING THE TEXT'S BIG IDEAS
As a group, brainstorm on the scenarios taken from the selection. Then, on a 1/2 illustration
board, draw the scenario or an equivalent symbolism. You will be given 7 minutes to illustrate
and 3 minutes to post and give a little explanation of your illustrations.
Group 1- The old man Popocatepetl was seated on a high rock with his white mantle about his
shoulders. He looked at the sky,he looked t the sea, he looked at the land---- nowhere could he
see any food. And he was very hungry, too.
Group 2- Once Popocatepetl's friend, the little eagle, flew near, and he called to him.
Group 3- Popocatepetl perceived the little animal with two arms, two legs, a head, and a very
brave air, and the eagle stretched forth his great arms and told the former to feed him.
Group 4- The thunderous voice of the old peak Popocatepetl rolls and rolls, if you know that
tongue, you can hear him say: "Oh, traitor! Traitor! Where are my wings? My wings, traitor! I
am very hungry! Where are my wings?"
Evaluate COLLABORATE and PERFORM (CHARACTER IMPERSONATION)
Within your group, choose a representative who will imitate the following characters from
"The Voice of the Mountain." Refer to the task given to each group. Make your own dialogue
but make sure it is related to the traits and role of the characters mentioned in the selection.
Group 1- Popocatepetl
Group 2- Eagle
Group 3- Little animal(human)
Group 4- King of everything
Note: 5 minutes to accomplish the task; 5 minutes to present and 3 minutes for the teacher's to

give the rating.
