Why become a TEFL UK host centre

TEFL teaching and training is a huge global industry

that continues to grow at pace. Whether the global
‘for teachers by teachers’
economy is booming or in recession, the TEFL market
with the motto remains strong.
‘great training, great
outcome’. Put simply, there is always a global demand to learn
and teach English!
TEFL UK
This fact ensures a secure investment for anyone
wanting to start a business in TESOL/TEFL training;
there are high opportunities for growth and
development, both in the short and long term future.
A husband and wife team with a passion for TEFL.

Phil & Claire worked as TEFL teachers in Thailand, Korea and Taiwan before
setting up the award winning TEFL recruiting company (ESLstarter). ESL starter
has established recruitment operations in over 14 countries across 4 continents,
including multi-national contracts with Education Ministries, private language
schools and NGOs.

After building a large network of schools and successfully placing over 5,000
teachers, Phil and Claire wanted a higher level of involvement in pre-departure
training for teachers on their books.

The objective was to have teachers fully prepared for their first class
through high quality and comprehensive TEFL training courses.

To facilitate this, TEFL UK was launched.

About TEFL UK

Proposal
Development of a 150 Hour Bespoke, Accredited,
Advanced Classroom-Based TEFL Course for Major Education
TEFL UK, in collaboration with ACCREDITAT
Introduction

As a long term partner of Major Education in Vietnam, it’s a great pleasure to be offered a new cooperation
opportunity. We trust this can develop into an exciting and fruitful long term collaboration. We are
confident that the combined experience of TEFL UK, ACCREDITAT and MAJOR will ensure a strong
foundation for continued success going forward.

1. 150 Hour Bespoke, Accredited, Advanced Classroom-Based TEFL Course

1. Your course will be a substantial course. Our past experiences of writing TEFL courses (including
Teaching Business English, Teaching English to Young Learners etc.) indicate that your course is likely to
include some 135,000 to 150,000 words.

2. It will be a wholly practical course. For us, practical insights, ideas and tips are much more important
than theory. Of course, theory underpins some aspects of teaching, but when a graduate starts teaching
EFL it’s these kinds of questions that will be in the forefront of his/her mind:

How do I plan this lesson?

When should I do this?
How do I write multiple choice questions?
How do I know they have grasped this point?
How can I keep up their motivation?

Your graduates will be dealing with individuals from different childhood experiences, different learning
experiences, different learning styles, different attitudes and different levels of motivation, so the theory
won’t always apply to everyone. Our approach will be to focus on what definitely does work in practice. Of
course, students can read about relevant theory in their own time, if they wish.

3. We will ensure the language in the course will be as plain and simple as possible – just as your
graduates should ensure when teaching EFL. There are no gold stars for teachers who use fancy
language when teaching EFL. As you know, it’s all about communication via plain and simple language.

4. Most importantly, this will not be an off-the-shelf course; it will be developed bespoke to your needs.
To ensure it is bespoke, we have attached a List of Suggested Content, indicating the content one would
expect to see in a high-quality, advanced 150 hour TEFL course, based on our experience. You can then
add, delete or change any items, if you wish. Or you can leave it as it is.5. The course materials then need
to be accredited. All the course materials will be accredited by ACCREDITAT, our favoured accreditation
body.

ACCREDITAT is a renowned, independent accreditation body, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. As time is of the essence, ACCREDITAT has agreed to
accredit each Module on its completion, instead of waiting for the whole course to be completed. This will reduce the timescale for delivering up the
completed, accredited course. I am grateful to ACCREDITAT for agreeing to do this.
2. What the course materials will also include

A robust assessment process

To prevent any reputational damage from the social media that the
course was ‘easy to pass’ we will construct a robust assessment
process. This will consist of:

Quizzes/tests at the end of each week. These will not be too

stringent to start with as we do not wish to stunt their motivation. The
quizzes/tests will consist of a mix of multiple choice and true/false
questions based on the content covered during the week. The trainer
will be provided with an answer key.

A lesson planning assessment, carried out once the input on

lesson planning and delivery has been covered. Students will
create a lesson plan and then deliver it to the peer group or any
external class group (in another school) if you can provide this. The
trainer will be provided with full guidance on how to run and assess
the lesson planning activity.

A Final Assessment, towards the end of the course, based on the

course content. It will consist of multiple choice questions,
true/false questions and some written answers. Again the trainer will
be provided with an answer key for the multiple choice and
true/false questions, and suggested answers for the written,
subjective questions.

The aims of this assessment process are to add variety to the

assessments, motivate the students and to give the students a very
good opportunity to pass.

We will help you further with the assessment process, providing ideas
and suggestions as to how you may wish to approach this. For example,
you could also consider allocating some marks in the total mark for
student attributes such as attention, assisting others and participation, if
you wish.
2. Student to student activities

Unlike an online course which has no interaction with other students, a key strength of a
high-quality classroom-based course is group discussion sessions and group
presentations on some aspect of the learning.

Students love these brainstorming sessions and learn a lot from their peers, in addition
to what they learn from their trainer. Also, they enjoy the break from the trainer input.

For example, the question raised by the trainer could be: What are the attributes of a
competent and effective teacher? The class is then split into small groups to work on
this question and then they present their efforts for discussion. The trainer will be given
a list of expected answers, based on our experience.

3. Trainer notes

We will include notes/guidance for the trainer, as needed.

For example, we may say to the trainer that an activity should be carried out as a
brainstorming activity, but do the students know exactly what a brainstorming process
really is and how it should be carried out? So, we will include a note about
brainstorming for the trainer to save him/her time by having to draw up notes on
brainstorming.

Trainer notes will appear now and again; they will not be in every session. There are
several learning elements which will not require trainer notes because they will be
TELL sessions from the trainer.

There’s no point in getting students to brainstorm  some subject they know nothing
about, e.g. teaching pronunciation, or phrasal verbs. So, we need to point out to the
trainer that such and such a session (or even a large part of a Module) is a TELL session
where the trainer simply takes them through it, asking the students frequently if they
have any questions along the way – and answering them.

Many poor classroom- based TEFL courses focus entirely on the students’ needs.
However, our experience tells us that it’s imperative that we also look after the trainer,
helping him/her along the way. This is what we will achieve with our notes.
4.  A timetable

Once the course content is finalised, we will construct a timetable for you, covering the 150 hours. We will need information
from you as to how you see the timetabling of the 150 hours, i.e. course hours per day, sessions at the weekend etc.

5. Homework

Another very important point to consider is homework. We always stress that it is unwise to assume that students will grasp
some complex language element after going through one session with the trainer.

So, we will build several homework sessions into the timetable, the majority of which will be pre-session reading on some
complex language element, e.g. modal verbs, on, say, Tuesday night, before the trainer takes them through it on, say,
Thursday.

So, both the students and the trainer can have a more relaxed learning session. Trainers like this method, instead of starting a
complex element with the students from scratch.
3. ACCREDITAT Accreditation of the 150
Hour Course

As stated Under Point 1, ACCREDITAT is our favoured

accreditation body for accrediting the course. They have over
20 years’ experience of in the TEFL/TESOL and Learning and
Development arena, both in teaching EFL and accrediting EFL.

As you will know, more and more the student buying decision
in the TEFL arena is based on the company’s accreditation and
not on the course fee. Gone are the days when students knew
little about accreditation.

ACCREDITAT’s accreditation process covers 4 key areas:

the course: that the course is in excellent order, that it

meets its objectives, and it does what it says it will do

the TEFL company/Provider: ethics, structure, processes

and procedures, particularly those protecting

the students (e.g. a refund policy); they do not explore the

financial side of your business

the tutor(s): experience and expertise

the assessment instruments: that they are valid, reliable,

fair etc.

Prospective students find it reassuring that the TEFL Provider

is upholding such rigorous and ethical standards and, without
doubt, this will benefit the marketing of your course.

You can explore their accreditation Standards at

http://www.accreditat.com/tefl-tesol-providers/standards-of-evidence.html .
The Standards may look stretching at first but in essence they are just good and
ethical business practice – and they are exactly what potential students want to see.
ACCREDITAT operates a streamlined accreditation process.
There are only 2 documents to complete.

Stage 1 - If you are happy with the Fees structure, and inform me as such, the first step is to
complete their Application for ACCREDITAT Accreditation which they will email to you.
You then complete the Application Form and return it to ACCREDITAT.

Stage 2– After the course development has started, they will send you their Standards and
Evidence Form, which you need to complete and return to them with your Evidence (e.g.
perhaps a copy of a tutor’s CV, information on how you keep documents secure etc. -
nothing complicated, just good business practice).

ACCREDITAT we will also provide additional ‘help’ information which will demonstrate the
type of Evidence you could produce, and they will help you with this if you have any
queries.

Note the following benefit that ACCREDITAT will offer your students.

They will offer your students an additional ACCREDITAT Confirmation Document in pdf
format if they wish to have it.

The ACCREDITAT Confirmation Document in pdf format is applied for voluntarily by the
student after completing your course and the document fee is paid by the student directly
to ACCREDITAT via PayPal.

In essence, the ACCREDITAT Confirmation Document in pdf format is confirmation from

ACCREDITAT that student:

did in fact complete the accredited course with the TEFL Provider on a specified
date.

It is a confirmation document, not an academic certificate, as ACCREDITAT did not deliver

the course.

ACCREDITAT started this many years ago at the request of students and now they issue a
substantial number of these per month.

Those who apply for the ACCREDITAT Confirmation Document also gain access to some
free TEFL/TESOL learning and development materials, based on ACCREDITAT’s
experiences.
4. Fee for the Project
However, as TEFL UK and Major Education have built up a strong relationship over the years, we feel it’s
only right to offer a 10% discount on the Total Fee that others would normally pay.
Here is our normal fee for this type of project:
This makes a Total Fee: GBP 4050. Please note this 10% discount must remain confidential between TEFL
UK and Major Education.

Course Development Fee: GBP 3000 If you decide to proceed, we would also like to offer the option to pay the Total Fee in 2 Instalments:

GBP 2025 before the project begins

GBP 2025 just before we send you your 150 hour bespoke, accredited, advanced classroom-based
TEFL course
Initial Accreditation Fee: GBP 1500
Note, in line with industry standards, we would also call for a:

10% royalty fee per student enrolment

Total Fee: GBP 4500 Note that there will also be an Annual Accreditation Renewal Fee of GBP 750 (due annually thereafter on
initial accreditation acceptance anniversary date and into the future) for your 150 hour bespoke,
accredited, advanced classroom-based TEFL course – payable direct to ACCREDITAT.
5. Start date and timescale

If you wish to proceed, the start date of the project will be determined by the following:

You have confirmed you wish to proceed and have confirmed you wish to pay the Total Fee of GBP 4050 in one lump sum OR pay in
2 Instalments of GBP 2025.
You have made any changes to the List of Suggested Content (attached) and have returned this to us. If you do not wish to make any
changes, just inform us as such.
You have completed and returned our Application for Course Writing (and Accreditation Services)
You have completed and returned ACCREDITAT’s Application for ACCREDITAT Accreditation.
We have received the Total Fee of GBP 4050, OR the First Instalment of GBP 2025.

Once these are all to hand, we will start the project immediately.

The timescale for the project will be 5 weeks.

6. Possible Assistance with your first course delivery

You may feel that you need some assistance with your first course delivery. We
can help with this, if needed. We have helped other Providers with this before.

This can be accomplished in 2 ways

1. We can provide a very experienced TEFL trainer to deliver your first

course. Where you have pinpointed one of your trainers to run the course in
future, your trainer should attend the course as a trainee. He/she will also
attend private 1-1 mentoring sessions with our trainer as needs be to discuss
training methods, approaches and techniques etc. relevant to the delivery of
your course. These mentoring sessions will take place at convenient times
outside of course time, arranged by our trainer.

2. Alternatively, we can provide a very experienced TEFL trainer to run a

Train the Trainer Coaching session on a 1-1 basis with your appointed trainer
before your trainer delivers the course for the first time. Your trainer will
need to read the whole course before the coaching session takes place.
Assuming your trainer has already gained some experience in training per
se, this can be accomplished in 7 coaching days.

The main costs for you will a return economy flight, reasonable hotel
accommodation with breakfast, any relevant project-related travel costs and
the trainer’s daily rate for the work carried out.

7. Support Throughout

Finally, it’s important to stress that TEFL UK and ACCREDITAT will provide full
support to you throughout the project and into the future.
