1. An asphalt pavement has a typical cross-section shown in Figure SPC-802.

The maximum
permissible stresses of the road materials are as follows:

Base allowable bearing pressure = 0.18 MPa

Subgrade allowable pressure = 0.50 MPa

Determine the following:

a. Maximum allowable static wheel load, W that can be applied on the surface layer if the
radius of contact between tire and pavement is 180 mm.
b. The actual bearing stress induced on the base course layer when subgrade reaches maximum
allowable pressure.

on a new alignment. The table below shows the five-year traffic data collected from DPWH
regional office along the proposed alignment.

Vehicle Number Load per

Description AADT
Code of axles axle, lbs

B, B1, B2 Light Vehicles (sedan, SUV, pickup) 2 2,000 75,000

12-2 Semi-trailer trucks 5 10,000 4,000

12-3 Truck semi-trailer 6 14,000 1,500

The regional office plans to adapt a flexible pavement with the following specifications
listed below.

Resilient modulus of asphalt concrete = 420 ksi

Resilient modulus of base course = 28.5 ksi
Resilient modulus of subbase course = 15 ksi
California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of base course material = 70
California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of subbase material = 30
California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of subgrade material = 6

Reliability of the pavement design = 95%

Standard deviation in traffic forecast = 0.45
and pavement performance
Initial serviceability index = 4.0
Terminal serviceability index = 2.5
