III. INPUT INFORMATION

Introduction: Teaching PE & Health in the Elementary -
Welcome to the Elementary Physical Education and Health section at LEARN.

A resource for teaching PE & Health through game play. enables student to develop an action plan on
healthy, active living.

Physical literacy is consists of movement, motor- and activity-specific skills. In the early grades the
learners are taught the ‘what,’ ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the movement. This progresses to an understanding
of the ‘why’ of the movement which is achieved by developing more mature movement patterns and
motor skills in a wide range and variety of exercise, sports and dance activities to specifically
enhance fitness parameters. The learners builds on these knowledge and skills in order to plan, set
goals and monitor their participation in physical activities (exercise, sports and dance) and constantly
evaluate how well they have integrated this their personal lifestyle. This implies the provision of
ongoing and developmentally-appropriate activities so that the learners can practice, create, apply
and evaluate the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to maintain and enhance their own
as well as others’ fitness and health through participation in physical activities. The curriculum also
allows for an inclusive approach that understands and respects the diverse range of learners; thus,
the program takes into account their needs, strengths and abilities. This is to ensure that all learners
have equivalent opportunities and choices in Physical Education. The curriculum emphasizes
knowing the ‘what’, ‘how’ and ‘why’ of movement. It focuses on developing the learners’
understanding of how the body responds, adjusts and adapts to physical activities. This will equip the
learner to become self-regulated and self-directed as a result of knowing what should be done and
actually doing it; is the learners are equally confident in influencing their peers, family, immediate
community, and ultimately, society.
What does an elementary PE teacher do?
In elementary schools, physical education teachers work with children of all fitness levels to
improve coordination, teach teamwork and inspire a love for physical activity. In middle or high school
classes you can often plan what you'll teach depending your experience or area of interest.

PROMOTING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN SCHOOLS

Regular physical activity provides young people with important physical, mental and social
health benefits

1. healthy growth and development;

2. • strong bones and muscles;
3. • control of weight and body composition;
4. • improved posture;
5. • improved cardiovascular health;
6. • reduced blood cholesterol;
7. • opportunities to make friends and enhance self-esteem;
8. • reduced stress, depression and anxiety.

Regular participation in physical activity has other benefits such as:

1. • an increase in the likelihood that physical activity will be maintained into adulthood;
2. • it creates a more positive school climate;
3. • students are less aggressive and experience fewer discipline problems (CAPHERD);
4. • it is positively associated with increased educational aspirations. This is even stronger with
students from disadvantaged backgrounds (Kerr 1996);

5. • it is correlated with improvements in subjects such as mathematics (Sallis et al 1999);

6. • leading to students being more productive, more motivated, better organised and more effective
in learning and performing tasks (Kidd 1999);

7. • the reduction of the likelihood of students being involved in anti-social behaviours (Kerr 1999);

8. • a decrease in the amount of vandalism, mischief, petty crime and other negative behaviours in
the community (Norrie and Mustard, 1999);

9. • enhancement of social and moral development.

Overweight and Obesity Among Children and Young People The prevalence of overweight and
obesity among children has risen dramatically in recent years. Approximately 20 to 25 % of
children aged 5-17 are now classified as overweight or obese. Children and adolescents who
are overweight are more likely to be overweight and obese as adults. They have an increased
risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, some types of cancer and
gallbladder disease due to Physical Inactivity.

On the other hand Physical activity levels among children are decreasing as they are exposed
to an ever growing range of sedentary alternatives to physical activities. These include
television, chat rooms, mobile phones, computer games, the internet and homework. Physical
inactivity increases the risk of dying prematurely, dying of heart disease and developing colon
cancer and high blood pressure (Centre for Disease and Prevention).

∙ Children who are encouraged to be physically active and develop a love of participation are
more likely to maintain participation into adulthood. for young people.
∙ Children between 5-12 years of age need at least 60 minutes (and up to several hours) of
moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.
∙ Children should not spend more than two hours a day using electronic media for
entertainment (eg computer games, TV, internet) particularly during daylight hours. A
combination of moderate and vigorous activities is recommended.
∙ The natural movement pattern of children is an intermittent or sporadic style of activity that
alternates with rest and recovery. Continuous moderate to vigorous physical activity
periods lasting more that 5 -10 minutes are rare among children prior to 12 years of age.
∙ Physical activities can be collected in long or short-term bouts. Different types of activities
including weight bearing activity which is important for bone health should be included.
Primary school age students should be involved in several periods of moderate to
vigorous physical activity throughout the school day including physical education classes.
∙ All children should have the opportunity to learn how to live an active lifestyle at school.
Schools provide unique opportunities to provide time, facilities and guidance for physical
activity.
In elementary schools across the United States, teachers are often tasked with teaching
health education or physical education, although they may not have specialist training. Health
and Physical Education for Elementary Classroom Teachers: An Integrated Approach is the
perfect resource for these educators. It covers both health and physical education while
giving current and pre-service teachers the skills to deliver appropriate lessons to their young
students.

Physical & Health education is an essential part of healthy living for people of all age groups,
especially those going to school. This is because school life is full of stress and anxiety at
every stage. Researchers have demonstrated the importance of physical activities for students in
a school environment. Thus, many schools are now encouraging students to take part in
physical education. Scientifically these activities have been proven to be as important as
doing school work. Focusing only on schoolwork can make a student’s life feel boring and
stagnant, which in turn can cause depression and failure. Physical education teaches students
to improve the quality of their life. This is why more schools are encouraging students to
maintain a balance between their school work and physical education. Physical activities and
exercises boost stamina, which can increase confidence, motivation, academic achievement,
and self-esteem.

Top 5 Reasons Why Physical & Health Education is as Important

as School Work and for Life
1. Physical Activity enhances an individual’s ability to think, concentrate, and maintain focus:

Several research studies show that performing physical activities helps in enlarging the basal
ganglia of the brain. The Basal Ganglia is a part of the brain which is responsible to maintain
an individual’s capability to focus. In this current era, students have several diversions in the
form of technology (Television, tablets, PCs, Mobile phones), therefore, it is difficult for them
to maintain focus. By promoting physical education, school teachers can help them improve
their concentration. Scientific research also reveals that physical education in school helps
improve the connections between neurons in the brain. Healthy and well connected neurons
help improve the over-all thinking ability of students, thus, making them more efficient in the
classroom.

2. Important for healthy growth and development:

In today’s world, many school children eat unhealthy foods. These may include fries, soft
drinks, pizzas, and burgers. Consuming these on a regular basis can lead to childhood
obesity. Physical education at school helps in preventing obesity and high blood pressure.
Physical exercise and activities will help them burn off their extra calories. If these calories are
not burned off they will be stored as fat. By doing physical exercises individuals use their
extra calories to gain energy. Plus, such activities play an important role in the healthy growth
and development of bones and cartilages. Bone strengthening exercises such as jumping are
particularly important for school children as such activities produce a force onto the bone that
helps enhance its strength and growth. While muscle strengthening exercises make muscles
larger and stronger, they also help children carry more weight and aid in protecting joints
against injuries. Being physically active makes the students energetic and strong which
motivates them to take interest in classroom activities.

Exercises that help strengthen muscles include:

∙ Climbing Trees.
∙ Monkey bar exercises.
∙ Bike Riding.
∙ Push-ups.
∙ Hula hooping.

A physically active student will also have a healthy heart. Any exercise which provides
oxygen to the muscles is called an aerobic exercise. Such exercises are essential for a healthy
heart. Research shows that kids who perform aerobic exercises, two to three times a week for
at least twenty minutes, have a healthier heart as compared to those who don’t take part in
physical education.

Some of the healthy aerobic exercises are:

∙ Playing Basketball.
∙ Playing Soccer.
∙ Jumping rope.

3. Prevents sleep deprivation:

A complete night’s sleep is an essential component of a happy and healthy life. Those
students who take part in physical activities and exercise regularly have a tired and exhausted
body that craves a good night’s sleep. Complete sleep makes kids more upright and attentive
during lectures in the classroom. Being attentive will help prevent them from performing
careless mistakes and will provide them the energy to be helpful towards teachers and fellow
students.

4. Helps in relieving stress and anxiety:

School life is hectic for every individual. Therefore, taking part in physical activities and
education allows students to relieve their academic stress and anxiety. Stress might be due to a
fight with a friend or a low grade despite hard work. Stressed students are not able to
concentrate and focus on their academic performance if they are not allowed time to de
stress. Physical activities give students an environment to breathe out their stress. By
exercising and breathing deeply, we provide extra air to our lungs which in turn provides more
oxygen to the brain, this makes the brain feel relaxed and stress-free. A physically active
individual is more likely to be happy and healthy, which makes them a better student in the
classroom. They often feel proud and happy about themselves and are good towards their
fellow students.

5. Physical education makes an individual flexible and happy:

Many schools have made physical education an essential component of their school
curriculum and students are promoted to maintain a healthy balance between their education
and exercise.

This is due to the fact that those students who take part in physical activities have proved to
be happier and healthier than those students who spend all their time doing school education
work. Such activities help develop blood circulation in an individual’s body. This helps in
providing more oxygen to the heart and brain and allows the body to maintain a balance
between physical and mental health. Balancing exercise and stretching also help improve
flexibility and physical balance which decreases the chances of injuries. Frequent exercise
also makes it less stressful to handle mental tasks.

10 reasons why Physical & Health Education is so important in schools (Chester College
international School )

1. Students who play sports are better able to concentrate and maintain focus, which has a positive
impact on their academic life. This can lead to improved attainment in all other academic subjects. 2.
Regular exercise is vital in the fight against child obesity. We all know the many health problems that
are associated with obesity and how important it is to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. Positive exercise
habits that are implemented in childhood and adolescence will likely continue into adulthood.
3. Students who exercise regularly have a better quality of sleep. They are therefore more alert at
school and have higher levels of concentration.
4. Physical exercise helps children relieve stress and anxiety. Young people today are arguably under
more pressure than ever, so it is vital for them to have an outlet for this stress. 5. Playing sports in
groups help young people to improve their teamwork and leadership skills. It also helps to form
stronger bonds between peers and promotes a healthy class dynamic. 6. Physical activity promotes
positive body image in teenagers, especially amongst women and girls. In this age of social media
and societal pressure to look a certain way, this is of utmost importance.
7. Sports teaches children to have improved self-discipline. They can implement this self-control in all
aspects of their life, from better controlling their emotions to being more self-motivated with their
studies.
8. PE helps children to develop their confidence. This can have a positive aspect on all areas of their
life, such as their personal relationships and ability to integrate quickly and make friends, to
thinking about their future goals.
9. Sport helps children develop their motor skills and strengthen their muscles. When fine motor skills
are developed, children will be more adept at handwriting or playing a musical instrument. 10.
Children who play regular sports have improved behavior in school.
