तदा--उस समय; वृ ष-ध्वज--शिव, जो बै ल पर सवार रहते हैं ; द्वे ष--ईर्ष्या; कलिल-आत्मा--दषिू त हृदय;
प्रजापति:--राजा दक्ष; शिव--शिव को; अवलोकात्‌--दे खने से ; अभवत्‌--हो गया; शरत्‌--शरद ऋतु में ;

Associating with devotees and serving them is one of the topmost necessity for advancement in devotional service. We may
do this even without understanding the significance, but we will still reap the benefit of our service. Or in the worst case, we
may even offend the devotees, but the reaction even though appears negative (we will get punished by the Lord or the
devotees for our offense), the ultimate effect is our purification only, because the punishment is ordained only with our
well-being in mind. Considering this point, we should always try to associate with devotees and serve them sincerely - we
can advance in our devotional service swiftly.
One of the best examples of personalities advancing in devotional service by a moment's association of a pure devotee is the
sons of Kuvera - Nalakuvara and Manigriva. The two sons were so much intoxicated with wealth and opulence that they
dare to offend a pure devotee like Narada Muni. Narada Muni cursed them to become Yamalarjuna trees and they stood as
trees in the backyard of Nanda Maharaja's residence. Lord Krishna came as Damodara and delivered them. When they
realized what great fortune Narada Muni gave them in spite of their shameful act, they could appreciate his greatness and
prayed to the Lord for increasing their devotional service. At that time, the Lord speaks a beautiful statement (SB 10.10.41)
emphasizing the importance of seeing the devotee face to face, what to speak of serving them or associating with them?
sādhūnāṁ sama-cittānāṁ  sutarāṁ mat-kṛtātmanām
darśanān no bhaved bandhaḥ  puṁso ’kṣṇoḥ savitur yathā
When one is face to face with the Sun, there is no longer darkness for one's eyes. Similarly when one is  face to
face with a sadhu, a devotee, who is fully determined and surrendered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one
will no longer be subject to material bondage.
The devotees are sama-chitta, equally disposed towards everyone. Equally disposed in the sense that their only aim is to
distribute the mercy of Krishna equally to everyone. The way of giving the mercy may be different but the ultimate end is
the same - Krishna prema. For Dhruva Maharaj and Prahlad Maharaj, Narada muni gave it in a favorable way because they
were favorably disposed. For the sons of Kuvera it came in the form of a curse because they were unfavorable towards
devotional service.
Then the devotees are also attached and determined to be fully absorbed in serving the Lord 24 hours. That is  sutarāṁ mat-
kṛtātmanām. At any cost they do not leave devotional service. Bhakti is their topmost priority, everything else is less
important for them including eating and sleeping.
If one can have the audience (darśanān) of such a devotee even for a brief moment, then he is completely relieved of the
material sufferings and anxieties (no bhaved bandhaḥ). Most of us would have realized it just by seeing our spiritual master
face to face and even interacting with him briefly, we become oblivious of all our material sufferings and transported to a
different world. Same is the testimony of so many devotees who came in touch with Srila Prabhupada even though briefly.
Their lives made a complete U-turn, from filthy to healthy, from morose to joyful. This is the tangible proof of the power of
a pure devotee and Krishna has no way but to bestow His mercy upon those jivas who are recommended by these pure
devotees.
Let me pray unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master, who just like Narada muni has taken me out of the gutter and is
relentlessly trying to teach me how to perform bhakti, even though I have no taste or qualification for it.
