04 March 2021 (MID SEMESTER EXAMINATION)
Subject: DYNAMICS OF MACHINES (ME 208)
Time: 2 Hrs Max. Marks: 30
Instructions:

1. Write your roll number & other essential details and then start writing answers on ONE SIDE
of A4 size white sheets.
2. Answers of this section may be in descriptive and involve calculations. Assume the missing
data suitably if required. Clearly write used notations and symbols.
3. On top & bottom of each page, there must be signature of student, roll number & page
number.
4. On the 1st page there should be also mentioned that MID SEMESTER EXAMINATION,
DYNAMICS OF MACHINES and Total number of pages.
5. Scan the answer sheet pages & prepare a pdf file. Name this file as - "AdminNo-Div-mse21-
DOM". For example - "U19ME001-Div-A-mse21-DOM". All students must submit prepared pdf
file of latest by 11.00 am.
6. There are total 3 (Three) pages in this question paper.

Q. 1 For the static equilibrium of the mechanism of Fig.1, find the required input (08)
torque in link AB. The dimensions of links are: AB =150 mm, BC = AD =
150mm, DC = 300 mm, CE= 100 mm and EF = 450 mm. Also find constraint
forces applied by each link on connected links. Use graphical method for
solution.

Q. 1 Determine the required input torque T1 for the static equilibrium of the offset
slider crank mechanism (Fig.2) & all constraint forces applied by each link on
other connected link. The applied piston load P is 100 N at C, while the external
load Q on link 3 (BC) at point D is 500 N. Point D is mid-point of link BC. Force
Q acts at right angle to link 3 (BC). The crank is positioned at angle 45° (φ =45°)
with frame 1. Neglect effect of friction and gravity. Use graphical method for
solution.

Q.2 A cross four bar mechanism is shown in Fig. 3; determine required torque on (08)
crank 2 (O2A) to keep the mechanism in static equilibrium. Also find contraint
forces applied by each link on connected link. AO2 = 200 mm, AB = 400 mm;
AC = O2O4 =700 mm; CO4 = 350 mm. Use graphical method for solution.

Q.3 A ship is propelled by a turbine rotor having a mass of 5000 kg and speed 2300 (08)
rpm. The direction of rotation of the rotor is counterclockwise when viewed from
the stern. The radius of gyration of the rotor is 525 mm. Determine the gyroscopic
effect in terms of magnitude of gyroscopic couple with its effect on the ship in
terms of direction of motion: (i) when the ship pitches 8.5 degree above and
below its normal horizontal position and the bow is descending with the
maximum velocity. The pitching motion is simple harmonic with a periodic time
of 17 seconds. (ii) when the ship steers to the right in a curved path having radius
of curvature of 180 m; given that the ship sails at velocity of 21.6 km/hour. (iii)
when the ship rolls & angular velocity of rolling is 0.05 rad/s counterclockwise
when viewed from stern (iv)Also calculate maximum angular acceleration during
pitching.

Q.4 A Hartnell governor having a central sleeve spring and two right-angled bell (06)
crank levers moves between the range of speed of 280 r.p.m. and 320 r.p.m. for
a sleeve lift of 20 mm. The sleeve arms and the ball arms are 70 mm and 110 mm
respectively. The levers are pivoted at 110 mm from the governor axis and mass
of each ball is 2.0 kg. The ball arms are parallel to the governor axis at the lowest
equilibrium speed. Determine (i) loads on the spring at the lowest and the highest
equilibrium speeds, and (ii) stiffness of the spring.

OR
Q.4 Explain the term height of the governor. Derive an expression relating the height
of the governor and spindle speed in the case of a Porter governor.
