Unit 3 Quarterly Project

Part 3
FLEE
Project Background
Over the course of this marking period, you have been learning about the science of climatology and meteorology (climate and
weather). As a part of your learning you have discovered the causes of severe weather events such as hurricanes and tornadoes.
In this project you will take on the role of an engineer who works for the government agency FEMA (Federal Emergency
Management Agency). FEMA representatives, such as yourself, strive to learn from past extreme weather events and natural
hazards in order to improve plans for protecting the people who live in the affected areas

Your Task:
As a FEMA engineer you have chosen to FLEE from a hurricane or tornado.

● For this portion of the project you will spearhead a new and improved evacuation plan for the citizens in the community to
follow in order to seek safety from the storm.

● Your product can be to create a written plan, a slideshow or “news”video outlining your evacuation plan or an alternate
product that has been approved by your teacher .

Brainstorm:

In the space below you will brainstorm some ideas for your evaluation plan.

Your plan must consider...

● How will you communicate with people to flee and how to do it safely?
● What is the evacuation route (hurricane) or safe zone (tornado)
● How will you get your citizens to safety? Be sure to consider the elderly and disabled citizens?
● How will people get supplies (like medical supplies, food, construction material, gas) for their homes and cars?
Be sure to identify if you are fleeing a hurricane or tornado that will help us understand your thinking.
