Unit 3 Quarterly Project

Part 3
STAY
Project Background
Over the course of this marking period, you have been learning about the science of climatology and meteorology (climate and
weather). As a part of your learning you have discovered the causes of severe weather events such as hurricanes and tornadoes.
In this project you will take on the role of an engineer who works for the government agency FEMA (Federal Emergency
Management Agency). FEMA representatives, such as yourself, strive to learn from past extreme weather events and natural
hazards in order to improve plans for protecting the people who live in the affected areas

Your Task:
As a FEMA engineer you have chosen to STAY during a hurricane or tornado.

For this portion of the project you will design a building where people in the community will seek shelter during the storm.

You will have a variety of ways to complete this task. A few ideas for creating your shelter would be to use google draw, scratch or
hand draw and upload a picture or an alternate product that has been approved by your teacher.

Brainstorm:

In the space below you will brainstorm some ideas for your shelter building design.

Your shelter must be able to hold 50 people for up to 72 hours (3 days) and include spaces for:
● Food/Nutrition
● Bed/Sleeping
● Bathrooms
● First Aid
Be sure to identify if you are staying through a hurricane or tornado that will help us understand your thinking.

Type of Storm:
