GED0102 - SECTION 57
MODULE 1:
RA1425
PROLOGUE:
2. Our educational system should further incorporate teachings and lessons about
the Filipino culture which includes not only the works of Jose Rizal, but also other
Philippine literature, music, dance, art, and even our language. Through this,
Filipinos will understand our heritage more and be able to develop more
appreciation and love for our country.
The most important objective of RA1425 or Rizal Law is to make the young
generation see the injustices and hardships that the Filipino people suffered during
the Spanish rule and how they fought for the freedom that we are enjoying today.
In this way, the youth will develop patriotism by example and understand how
critical it is for the youth to speak up on social issues and fight for relevant causes
because this will be the key in ensuring a better future for our country. The
inclusion of Rizal’s works in our educational curriculum provides a source of
inspiration to young Filipinos to emulate the strengths, bravery, and solidarity told
in these stories.
Yes, the Rizal Law is still relevant to 21 st century learners. The works of
Rizal featured the oppression of the Filipinos by the Spanish colonizers, the
inequality between the rich and poor, and the inaccessibility of basic social
services in our country which are all still true in the present times. The Philippines
is still under the influence of imperialist countries. Many Filipinos are still living
below the poverty line with limited to no access to proper education, safe housing,
equal job opportunities, and a good healthcare system while the rich are getting
richer. The times may have significantly changed but the social ills in our country
remains the same. Hence, the 21st century learners will still learn so much from the
works of Rizal - that they should uncompromisingly fight for their rights and
struggle for a genuinely free and equal society. The challenge now, since the 21 st
century learners are now exposed to various tools for learning and other external
media, educators must upgrade their strategies in order to increase participation in
these types of courses.
The Rizal Law only focuses on the works of Jose Rizal but for me, it would
be better if this law could be in more comprehensive one which includes the works
of other known Filipino heroes as well. With this, students will have a more
diverse pool of ideas and principles in showing our love for the country. It might
also be good to increase the budget allocated for the implementation of this law in
various schools and universities to ensure the widespread provision of textbooks,
readings, and other learning materials needed for the smooth instruction of these
courses. It might also be good to specify other creative forms of learning such as
field trips or cultural immersions to spark more interaction and interest among the
young learners.
Complying with RA1425 means you are subjecting yourself into learning
more about Rizal’s ideas and principles. From these learnings, you will be able to
apply them in your everyday lives. One of Rizal’s most famous teachings was that
“The pen is mightier than the sword.” This only says that when we fight for a
certain cause or advocacy or even when we just have a simple fight with another
person, words have far more power and influence over any physical action. So, it is
better to settle things through diplomatic communication rather than acting
violently.
Another lesson from Rizal is to “Use time to the fullest,” like when he spent
most of his time with self-improvement. In life, we should make the most out of
every moment and make sure to grab every opportunity that comes are way,
especially if it is greatly beneficial to your growth and development as a human
being. This could be in the form of learning new skills, travelling to new places, or
trying out new activities.
Rizal has indeed imparted a lot of life lessons that we must all continue to
live by. Even if we are in the 21 st century, it is important that we never forget our
history and how our ancestors fought for our freedom and democracy today.
