Introduction
A coupling can be defined as a mechanical device that
permanently joins two rotating shafts to each other. The most
common application of coupling is joining of shafts of two
separately built or purchased units so that a new machine can
be formed. For example, a coupling is used to join the output
shaft of an engine to the input shaft of a hydraulic pump to raise
water from well. A coupling is used to join the output shaft of an
electric motor to the input shaft of a gearbox in machine tools.
A coupling is also used to join the output shaft of an electric
motor to the input shaft of a compressor. There is a basic

Theory (Rigid Coupling – Muff Type)

Muff coupling has following advantages:

Problem Statement 1
A rigid coupling is to be designed to transmit 20 kW power at

Theory (Flexible Coupling – Bushed Pin Type)
A flexible coupling employs a flexible element like a rubber
bush between the driving and the driven flanges. This flexible
rubber bush not only accommodates the misalignment but also
absorbs shocks and vibrations. The construction of the flexible
coupling is shown in figure below.

The bushed-Pin type flexible coupling has following advantages:

(i) It can tolerate 0.5 mm of lateral or axial misalignment and
1.5° of angular misalignment.
(ii) It prevents transmission of shock from one shaft to the other
and absorbs vibrations.
(iii) It can be used for transmitting high torques.
(iv) It is simple in construction and easy to assemble and
dismantle.

N/mm2. The permissible shear stress for the coupling should be
limited to 18 N/mm2 and the bearing pressure between the
bush and coupling should be limited to 2 N/mm2.

Dimensions of Keys

Sheer stress in key
Τ(induced) = (2 x Mt) / (d x b x l) = 35.368 Mpa
Τ(permissible) = 50 Mpa
35.368 <50 hence is safe in sheer.
Crushing Stress in key
Crushing stress σ(induced) = (8 x Mt) / (d x h x l) = 80.84 Mpa
Crushing stress σ(permissible) = 110 Mpa
80.84<110 hence safe in crushing.

Conclusion
1. We learnt the significance of PSG Databook for designing of
the coupling.
2. Need of coupling arises when the power is to be
transmitted from a driver shaft to driven shaft, which may
or may not be completely aligned.
3. All the dimensions from the empirical formula were found
to be fit for use and no modifications in them were
required.
