Midterm Exam in Number Theory
Part II: Modified True or False: Write TRUE if the statement is true, explain by citing
a theorem or a property. If the statement is false, write FALSE and explain or give
a counterexample. [3 pts each]
1. 9 divides 3
- FALSE, since 3 = 9(1/3), 1/3 is not Є of Z.
2. Larger integers have more factors than a smaller integers
- FALSE, for some of the larger integer is a prime number their only factor pair are
1 and itself. For example 937 is a larger number, but it’s also a prime number.
- TRUE, divisibility test of 9 is that sum of all the digits is divisible by 9. Hence
test of divisibility of 18 is that unit digit is even. It is either 0,2,4,6 or 8 and
simultaneously sum of the digits is divisible by 9.
- TRUE, 953 is a prime it can only be factor to 1 and the number itself.
7. 31 is a Mersenne prime.
- FALSE, Mersenne prime is a number expressed in the form 2P-1 where p is
Prime.Since, 31 is not of the form 2P – 1, p is prime, 31 is not a Mersenne Prime.
8. The integer 19 is a Fermat's prime.
- FALSE, because Fermat’s prime can be expressed in the form of Fm=2²^m+1,
m>0. Since, 19 is not Fermat’s prime.
