COURSE INFORMATION

Course Name MATH 106 – Calculus 1 with Analytic Geometry

Course Credits 3 Units

Course Description The course equips the students with knowledge and skills about lines and conic sections, limits, and continuity of functions,
differentiating and integrating algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions in one variable needed in higher calculus.
The course emphasizes the enhancement of critical thinking and problem-solving skills related to analytic geometry and calculus.
Students of this course are expected to employ computer applications/software and other technological devices as tools in learning and
problem solving.

Hours/week

Pre-requisite MATH 103 – Plane and Solid Geometry

Course Outcomes At the end of the course, the pre-service teachers should be able to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of core analytic geometry concepts by relating these to calculus concepts of limits, continuity,
derivatives, and antiderivatives; and
2. demonstrate higher order thinking by applying concepts and skills in carrying out computations and explorations of analytic
geometry and calculus problems with or without the use of ICT tools.

6 UNIT III: Limits

Calculus is fundamentally different from the mathematics that you have studied previously: calculus is less static
and more dynamic. It is concerned with change and motion; it deals with quantities that approach other quantities.

TOPIC: LIMITS
To a great extent, calculus is the study of the rates at which quantities change. It will be necessary to see how the
value f (x) of a function f behaves as the argument x approaches a given number. This leads to the idea of limit.

PROPERTIES OF LIMITS

In the foregoing example we assumed without explicit mention certain obvious properties of the notion of limit.
Let us write them down explicitly.

3|MATH 106
4|MATH 106
Properties IV–VII have a common structure. Each tells us that, provided f and/or g has a limit as x approaches a,
another related function also has a limit as x approaches a, and this limit is as given by the indicated formula.

EXISTENCE OR NONEXISTENCE OF THE LIMIT

In certain cases, a function f (x) will not approach a limit as x approaches a particular number.

ONE-SIDED LIMITS

It is often useful to consider the limit of a function f (x) as x approaches a given number either from the
right or from the left.
