RE: TAPECHANGER OVERHAUL FOR T1 AND T2 AT TAGAMENDA SUBSTATION:

1.0 INTRODUCTION;

Tap-changer overhaul increases transformer life, reliability, and lower overall maintenance and
operating cost. The contact life and the frequency of operations or the time in service determine
the interval between overhauls. A counter records the number of operations run by the on-load
tap-changer. The registered number of operations should be noted at every inspection and
overhaul. The on-load tap-changer normally overhauled regularly at intervals of 1/5 of the
estimated contact life. The relevant information as stated on the rating plate

Experts from ABB carried out the tape changer overhaul of T1 and T2 at Tagamenda and some
experts from TANESCO were attached to ensure that everything was conducted as required.

1.2 ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT DURING OVERHAUL

The overhaul of the tape changer includes the following:

o Oil draining and filtering
o Oil testing
o Checking fixed and moving contacts of the selector switch and replacing with
new ones.
o Change-over selector switch inspection and replacement
o Checking the transition resistors
o Checking the pressure-relay and replacing it.
o Lubrication of the drive shaft system
o Checking the motor-drive mechanism
o Inspection and Replacing of the motor belt
o Oil refilling
o Turns ratio tests
