ACTIVITY PROPER
Performance Assessment: The learners demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and underlying principles in the
basic knowledge on the List.

Part #1 : Essay writing

1. A ship develop a LIST for one of two reasons; G is out of the centerline of the ship and Negative GM. Enumerate at
least 2 or more possible causes, How to recognized and Corrective measures for the following:
 List caused by negative GM
 List caused by G being off the centerline
 List caused by combination of negative GM and G off the centerline
Part #2 : Problem solving
1. Calculations based on the following problems provided and need to be answer below:
1.1. A ship, initially upright, has a displacement of 3500 tonnes, KM 3.80m and KG 3.15m. Calculate the list caused by
shifting a weight of 15 tonnes horizontally across the deck through a distance of 14m.

Part #1 Answer

If GM is slightly negative, the ship will loll (stay heeled at the angle of inclination where righting
and upsetting forces are equal) and flop from side to side. If GM is negative, the ship will
capsize when inclined.

Righting arms are significantly reduced when the center of gravity is off-centerline. This
reduction results in the ship having a negative righting arm (upsetting arm) at 0° inclination.
Where the corrected curve crosses the horizontal axis, positive righting arms are achieved.
This is the angle of list; the ship will roll about this point. Unequal distribution of weight on either
side of center line due to loading. Shift of weight transversely. Addition or removal of weight
unsymmetrically about center line.

The vessel's stability is reduced by both an increase in the height of the center of gravity and
movement from centerline. A negative GM condition exists, represented by the "uncorrected"
curve. An off-center weight, represented by the cosine curve, is added and a larger list
develops. A combination of the previous causes of list.
