Module This module provides the learner with a foundation knowledge of shipboard operations,
Description: including cargoes, cargo-handling and care; a knowledge of the constructional features of
the principle types of cargo-carrying ships and naval vessels; the main aspects of ship
loading and stability and the application of the principal calculations associated with this.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe the movement of the centre of gravity of a ship when loading, discharging and moving
weights.
LO2 Calculate the stability of ships.
LO3 Outline the constructional components of ships.
LO4 Identify the main ship types, their layout and uses
LO5 Outline the characteristics of the most common cargoes carried on board ships.

Indicative Content
Ship Stability
Displacement, DWT, flotation. Basic calculations for displacement, righting moment. Moving weights.
Calculations to determine initial GM and transverse stability. Introduction to trim. Effect on trim and draft
due to loading/discharging/moving weights aboard. Dock water density and allowances for
loading/discharging. Effect of free surface.
Ship Construction
Names of principal parts of a ship. Definitions of main dimensions. Principal ship types. The layout of
General Cargo, Oil, Gas, Bulk, RO/RO and Container vessels. Hull stresses and the arrangements to
resist stresses. Panting and pounding. Structure: Profile and transverse sections of vessels built on
longitudinal and transverse framing systems
Shipboard Operations
Types of cargoes carried. Types of cargo gear and equipment. Hold preparation. Preparations for loading,
cargo care, stowage and ventilation. Cargo plans and their preparation.
