The main idea from the poem that Hughes was saying is that he likes things that other

races would also like. He likes to eat, sleep, being in love, he likes to drink. He likes the records

from Bach, Bessie, Bop. For Christmas he would like a pipe. He and his teacher are both

Americans even though he is colored and young while his teacher is white and old. He can learn

from the teacher and the teacher can also learn from him. Hughes is the only colored student in

the English class at the college. He wants to be accepted as a person not as a person of color. At

the age of twenty-two he is not too sure who he is as he is in an environment that looks down

on a person of color. Even though he is writing on a white sheet of paper it would never be

looked at the same as his white counterparts, his work would always be considered as a colored

student paper. He also stated that he is hearing Harlem and New York which I’m gathering that

he meant that all the different sounds from the city was familiar to him. It was something he

was used too as it was a part of him because he was born there but he also grew up there and

went to school there, the city of Harlem was a part of his identity as that was where in college

was.

The main idea from the essays written by Cullington is that textspeak is making it hard

for students to write formally. Text speak is the use of abbreviations and emojis. By texting

using abbreviations many students are not remembering how to spell, use proper grammar or

even the use of proper punctuations. Students are so used to texting that sometimes when they

are writing a formal paper, they don’t even realize the are using textspeak such as ‘u’ for the

word you, ‘wat’ for what etc. texting in abbreviations has become almost as a second nature

that most people don’t even realize that they are texting instead of writing in a formal

academic tone. I agree that by us using slangs and abbreviations when texting it can mess with

where one writing skills should be. Yes, I believe that how I text do affect how I write because

sometimes I use abbreviations not remembering I’m writing an essay not a text message to a

friend.

Taking Notes is when you write down any information that might be useful. You should

write it in your own words and writing style.

Synthesizing is when two or more sources are gathered and used to form new

information or to support a new idea. When synthesizing information should be gathered to

find the key point, themes or trends.

Quote is imputing someone’s text into your own paper you must use short quotation

marks when doing so, that it can differentiate from your own text in the paper.

Summary is when you take the main points of a topic and put it into your own word. It

should be brief as possible and does not include all the details.
4

Paraphrasing is using information from a source in your own words and structure it

should be able the same length as the original text. It includes all the main points but worded in

a different way so that it is not like the original text.

Plagiarism is using the original text and passing it off as your own, when using some

ones work you should cite where the information was received so that it does not come back as

plagiarism. Plagiarism is usually done unintentionally because the writer follower the source

text too similarly or the didn’t paraphrase or summarized much different from the original

source or they did not quote where the text was from or cite it on a reference sheet or in text.
