RATES LAB GUIDE

Title: Rate of a Reaction

Aim: To determine the order of the reaction with respect to sodium thiosulfate by investigating the
reaction between sodium thiosulfate and hydrochloric acid through changes in concentration of the
sodium thiosulfate.

Use results table, apparatus and method from the lab

Results:

Time to 1 decimal point as well as 1000/time

Plot graph of 1000/time on y axis vs volume of Fb1 on x axis

Graph is best fit

0,0 is a plot point

Discussion:

As volume of thiosulfate decrease the time taken for the cross to disappear increase or decrease. Did
1000/time increase or decrease

Balanced chemical

formation of sulphur caused reaction mixture to become cloudy

Total volume was kept constant for each experiment therefore volume of sodium thiosulfate was
representative of its concentration

Relate volume of thiosulfate to the time taken for reaction and rate pf reaction (1000/t) [as volume
of thiosulfate used increased i.e. its concentration was increased, time taken for the cross to
disappear increase or decrease and did rate 1000/t increase or decrease]

In plotting graph, a linear relationship was seen between the rate of reaction and concentration of
thiosulfate which is consistent with a first order reaction

Background on rates

SOE: human reaction time in starting and ending stopwatch is dependent on the operator,
determining when the cross disappeared when the solution became cloudy was subjective to the
operator, loss in transfer

Precautions: the entire volume of the reaction mixture was kept constant, the contents of the
beaker were swirled to ensure the completeness of the reaction, depth of the solution was kept
constant
