WHAT TO DO
The transition from primary to secondary school creates many challenges and
opportunities. This transition leads to many changes, which can create uncertainty and
fear. For this task you are to design a brochure that identifies within the school the
individuals or groups which assist Y7 students in developing a stronger sense of
belonging. Some examples include teachers, coaches, sporting teams, music, SRC, debating
teams etc.

Your brochure is to be done on an A4 page which is folded in half so that it gives you 4
pages in portrait format. On each of the pages do the following:

Page 1 – A catchy slogan, colourful title and pictures related to belonging / connectedness

Page 2 – List formal and informal school activities that promote a sense of belonging for
students. Formal activities are ones that are organised and have a set structure e.g.
debating. Informal activities have little or no set structure, are loosely organised and are
easily changed e.g. handball during recess.

Page 3 – Select one activity from page 2 and explain the advantages of belonging to this
group in respect to being connected and feeling supported (100 – 200 words). You may
wish to interview someone who has been involved in the co-curricular programme here
at school – why do they participate? What benefits do they get from their participation?

Page 4 -Explain how two of the following people - Headmaster, Head of Middle School, MS
House Coordinator, Head of Sport, Roll Call teacher, School Counsellor or Subject teacher -
could assist you at school with issues a Y7 student could experience during their first year
in high school.
