T 172 METHODS OF SAMPLING AND TESTING

Standard Method of Test for

Bituminous Mixing Plant Inspection

AASHTO DESIGNATION: T 172-93

AASHTO T 172-93 is identical to ASTM D 290-91a except for the following:

1. All references to the ASTM standards contained in ASTM D 290-91a, listed in the following table, shall be replaced with the
corresponding AASHTO standard.

Referenced Standards
ASTM AASHTO
C 136 T 27
D75 T2
D 140 T 40
D 242 M 17
D 546 T 37
D 979 T 168
D 995 M 156

2. Sections 3.1.2.1 and 3.1.4.1 of ASTM D 290-91a are not included in AASHTO Standard T 172-93.

3. Insert an additional section immediately following Section 8.5.3 of ASTM D 290-91a as follows:

"Proportioning of Dryer-Drum Operations:

Aggregate Feed-The inspector shall witness the calibration of the cold feed and mineral filler feeders at various gate openings or
control arm settings and check the contractor's computations for and plot the respective bins to kilograms or pounds delivered per
revolution of the feed of mechanisms. In lieu of this, the inspector shall check the calibration process developed by the plant
operator to produce a combined flow from the cold feed bins based on electronic calibrations. This will consist of a series of
electronic dial settings for each cold feed gate opening which has been determined at several increments of total rate of flow for
the plant. As a guideline, a calibration point should have been determined for approximately each 100 tons per hour rate of
production throughout the range of the plant's capacity. The calibration will have been determined by independently running each
cold feed through the plant and determining the proper dial or gauge setting to correspond to a measured rate of flow for each
ingredient and for each gate opening.
Bituminous Materials Feed-The inspector shall witness a check on the bituminous material feed at several increments of rate of
production throughout the range of the plant's capacity. This may be done by diverting the bituminous material into a container
for volumetric or mass measurement. Prior to commencement of production, the inspector shall assure that the bituminous
material feed controls have been properly marked to correspond to positive calibration of the bituminous material feeds."
