CALCULUS 1
Course Description: An introductory course covering the core concepts of limit, continuity and
differentiability of functions involving one or more variables. This also includes the application of
differential calculations in solving problems on optimization,, rates of change, related rates,
tangents & normal, and approximations; partial differentiation & transcendental curve tracing.
Course Outcomes: (1) Differentiate algebraic & transcendental functions, (2) apply the concept of
differentiation in solving word problems, & (3) analyze & trace transcendental curves.

FUNCTIONS
Function, is an expression, rule, or law that defines a relationship between one variable (the
independent variable) and another variable (the dependent variable).
If a variable y is so related to a variable x that whenever a numerical value is assigned to x,
there is a rule according to which a unique value of y is determined, then y is said to be a function
of the independent variable x.
TYPES OF FUNCTION
1. ax^n + bx + c
2. Rational Function
- A rational function is any function which can be written as the ratio of two
polynomial functions, where the polynomial in the denominator is not equal to zero.
3. Exponential Function
4. Logarithmic Function
5. Trigonometric Function
- Trigonometric functions are functions of an angle.
6. Absolute Value Function
OPERATION OF FUNCTION
1. Addition
2. Subtraction
3. Multiplication
4. Division
5. Composite
6. Finding the roots
7. Finding the domain & range
8. Plotting the graph
