1. Give the difference between management & supervision. Cite
an Example.

Answer:
The School is an organization of complex activities which are carried out by people and
are coordinated by different persons. Thus, management is necessary in school to co-
ordinate the various activities of units for goal achievement. Management in school
entails working with and through teachers, non-teaching personnel and learners to get
things done effectively. Management in school is more concerned with the institution,
its goals, policies and execution of these policies. In school management, the primary
aim has to do with improvement of teaching and learning and all activities of the
school. The functions of management in school are performed by the school heads.
He/she is a coordinator who has to organize activities in such a way that things work
smoothly, effective and efficiently. School head also described as the individual in a
school setting who directs the affairs of the school in such a way as to achieve its
primary goals and objectives. He/she is involved in effective planning, organizing,
supervision, controlling and evaluation. For example, let’s look at how our school head
uses managerial ingredients in managing the school. First of all, he/she appraises
his/her household and it's need. He/she forecasts the needs of the school for the period
of a week or a month or longer. He/she takes stock of the resources and any
constraints on them. He/she plans and organizes the resources to obtain the maximum
benefits out these resources. He/she monitors and controls the budget and expenses
and other activities. He/she divides the work among other members and coordinates
their activities. He/she encourages and motivates them to do their best in completing
their activities. He/she works towards improving goals, resources, and the means to
attain these goals. Another example is school heads checking and monitoring the work
of our teachers such as WHLP if it is aligned to our current curriculum.

While supervision is an administrative process through which the leader/school head

ensures that his subordinates are all contributing towards an effective learning process.
It also attempts to look into the organization of learning programs, the grouping of
pupils, method of evaluating, reporting, and determining student’s progress, the
content of the curriculum, the teaching methods, the philosophy and practicing of
discipline, the time schedule, place and procedure of staff meetings, procedures used in
parents conference, the study and use of community resources. All these are evaluated
and thoroughly discussed in an attempt to improve the learning and growth of the
students. The concept of supervision is on that describes a process that is common to
all professions and occupations. No organization can function effectively without it.
Supervision is an interaction between at least two persons for the improvement of the
activity. It is a formative, supportive and developmental process designed to improve
and process of guiding, encouraging, directing, and motivating workers so as to
improve their output. The purpose of instructional supervision in the school is to
develop educational goals, control, and coordinate educational activities, motivate
teachers and other staff, solve problems in educational organization, develop teaching
professionalism and evaluate or assess educational outcomes.
In addition, instructional supervision is needed to ensure that each individual teacher
with the school had been performing the duties for which he was scheduled and to
improve the effectiveness of teachers so that they could contribute meaningfully to the
attainment of the system’s goals.  It could be summed up that the purpose of
instructional supervision is to improve the teaching and learning process for the benefit
of the students, teachers, and society.
2. Which is important in leading the organization, management or
supervision? Defend your answer.

Answer:
Being school head or a leader and manager of the school, with a critical role to play in
its ongoing development. The focus should be to expect all the learners in your school
to improve their knowledge and develop into the best people they can be, for the
educators to teach and support the development of learners, and for the community to
support the school in this quest. However, no school is a perfect environment and
school managers need to focus centrally on teaching and learning as the main purpose
of education, through becoming a learning organization. The importance of the function
of the school head and other school managers is to adopt a critical perspective,
constantly questioning how to improve teaching and learning in your school.
However, in the efforts of improving teaching, supervision can be one of the strategies
to enable teachers to achieve the goal. Teachers are one of the key inputs to education
delivery; thus, the quality of education partially depends on the way they are trained
and supervised. This is because supervision is genuinely concerned with the growth and
development of students. Besides, many researchers claim that supervision can improve
classroom practices and lead to student success by improving teachers’ professional
growth and their work performance. These days, supervision does not aim to inspect or
evaluate the teachers’ performance but it moves its direction into a technical process
which is aiming for the continual teachers’ development, also found that the view of
supervision has changed from inspection to a school-based collaborative process that
aims in improving instruction. It is a form of guidance for teachers to enhance their
teaching skills through various methods such as classroom visits, educational
workshops, seminars, and training courses which help to meet teachers’ needs.
Supervision provides equal importance to students, and teachers by having constant
interaction between the supervisor and the teacher to improve teaching and learning
processes.
