Could you tell me how to remove this so I don't have to hear my Dad say "what you
are 30 some with mechanical degree and can't get a shower plug out." You press one
end to open the other to close
home improvement

I tried to submit it with a photo but it said removed or unapproved or something so

here is an imgur link. https://imgur.com/a/GkMGdkH It is a show plug you push to
open on one end and push to close it in the other. I assume it twists or pulls or
something but I don't wanna break it pulling on it. I would appreciate some help
with this. I have the stuff to clean it out just can't remove the dang plug. I
looked it up and it had different methods but don't know which this is.

Ok it pulled up a little from the close side and tilted a bit back but still
doesn't seem to wanna turn and I see no fasteners. It is plastic and not super
sturdy. It is like there is a joint right believe the rubber but it doesn't pull up
enough or push down enough to get to it. https://imgur.com/a/LZvLErU

update this is the bottom of the top where it attaches but no screw on opposite
side just this protuberance. https://imgur.com/a/ipqS9sz

To those who hate the deathhouse...Some changes I've made that have my players
RAVING
STORY

So I am a first time DM long time player. We just started COS and I homebrewed a
whole shopping/meeting trip in Daggerford prior that went very well

My group is a Ranger, Moon Druid, Paladin and a Fey Warlock (paladin and Ranger
don't have subclasses yet). They all got a lvl 1 feat but Custom Linage and Vhuman
were banned as a swap.

We arrived in Barovia and i had the group find that the mists were starting to
surround them and they encountered Rose and Thorn went into the house. Honestly top
floor I did very little changes. (I'm going to refer to areas by numbers for my own
sanity)

Top Floor

In area 6- I noted that these suits of armor were plate. Our Paladin put one on. It
will degrade the second they leave the house but it gives him a beefy 20ac meaning
he can now effectively tank

14 Broom was similar but they just closed the door. I said that was it it stopped
as it could no longer see the target

15A Spectre - I made it fairly clear that she was looking for a baby and they spoke
to her. She still attacked but I made her have to do a Wisdom save each time
someone mentioned anything about a baby and she took a - to her attack rolls. She
would alternate targets as she wasn't as dumb as the armor or broom. In the end she
never actually hit due to crap rolls.

This was the only change to the upper level. But it meant the 11 animated armor
struggled to hit him as he would dodge to hold the line. 14 Broom was similar but
they just closed the door. I said that was it it stopped as it could no longer see
the target. These things have super low INT so i played them as dumb enough to only
hit whats in front of em. Broom was similar but they just closed the door. I said
that was it it stopped as it could no longer see the target

LOWER level

I moved a few things around and did a bit of a lore change.

1- Walter was born to the spectre (obv prior to her death) the housemaid. Due to
this Elizabeth killed her and cursed the baby but Gustav loved the baby and wanted
to keep him. This is why the spectre is up stairs shes looking for her own child.

34- Where you usually find 2 ghouls (both dursts) you only find Elizabeth who
screams about the party being cheating whores and is very clearly a dark mutated
version of her. They noted quickly she was wearing the same things as her portrate.
My party went here after the mound. Here they find Gustav's diary that lore dumps
all that happened. The affair, the baby the murder and cursing that turned Gustav
and the baby into a monster also cursed her.

29 - The zombies here are super dumb and only hit whats in front of them and could
easilly be held at a doorway. The party did and our Paladin held the line and only
got hit once.

38 - I changed the Shambling Mound to a Flesh Mound and had it attack when they got
close (exact same stats) but made it have 2 distinct faces. One is Gustav one is
Walter. You could control who it attacks by either insulting or attacking the baby
head as the father would angrily attack whoever did it. This fight is NOT that bad.
it hits like a truck but we had our moon druid pin it into its spot and it cant
grapple him as he's too big, its also VERY slow and easy to kite. My party took the
2 heads and put them into approriate graves (both in Gustavs) Gustav says "She did
this" and they knew that Elizabeth was the issue. I also had them drop a pearl of
power for my Warlock

36- I added a +1 bow here for my ranger

I made it clear that the traps around the house once they refused to kill could be
figured out so they all got advantage on the way through by taking their time.

The big one. When they escape Strahd is there to congratulate them for removing the
eyesore of the house. Bring him in early and make him a presence.

I really think with a few small changes to give the house a bit more story it

Its worth altering a bit because it is VERY hard to give too much lore outside of a
diary that is confusing as fk.

Thoughts on DM'ing player's concept
REQUEST FOR HELP / FEEDBACK

I'm currently prepping for a CoS campaign, adult crowd, some reasonably new
players. One said he wanted to play a pc with split-personality. (Just one class,
background, no fancy mechanicals. )

Backstory would be he was a pair of twins once, but parents couldn't feed both.
Instead of starving both, opted to save one. As last resort dad took them to a
local hag, this saved bith in one body.

I figured the Symbiote Dark Gift would be perfect for this, since the player
actually asked for a mechanic that offered the same (, but worse,) recovery from 0
hp. Should I just give him this at lvl 1, or drop it on him the first time he goes
to 0?

Two questions : what would make for an interesting agenda for the "symbiote"? I
figure something to do with the hags. (Bonegrinder and/or Jenny)

2) He'd like to switch fighting styles between personalities : bow vs sword. Is

this balanced when it comes to magic items distribution?

Help with the allies/ magic items locations
REQUEST FOR HELP / FEEDBACK

Im planning to run CoS soonish, probably during the summer, but Im already in the
middle of doing prep for it.

My main issue right now is where to put the magic items and which allies to pick.

The Tomb of Strahd: I plan to put it in the tower peaks of Castle Ravenloft so
the players some reason to go up there

The Holy Symbol of Ravenkind: this is the one Im kinda stuck on, I could use
Argynthosvolt but it wont really fit with the allies I want to run (more on that
later)

Sunsword: Amber Temple, a late game item in a late-ish game location is perfect
for what I need

Allies: For CoS I want to run multiple allies, for better or worse (advice
would be greatly appreciated) I think I want to run Rudolf van Richten, a cool
vampire hunter with a great backstory. Kasimir, will give characters extra reasons
to go to the Amber Temple. And Im not sure on the last allie I dont want
something too powerful that would make the final fight to easy.

Any advice is greatly appreciated and Id love some feed back on my ideas, I dont
want to cook Barovia so help is appreciated.

Using Van Richtens Guide to Ravenloft to supplement COS
REQUEST FOR HELP / FEEDBACK

Introduction
Recently I have begun to run my first COS campaign after reading Van Richtens Guide
to Ravenloft and I must say VRGR has some excellent supplementary mechanics,
material and stat blocks that can be utilised in COS. Especially since when I read
through COS while the generic monsters are interesting they can seem a bit stale in
my opinion or get easily destroyed with the right party. This is however in
reference to generic monsters and some NPCs but not all.

Alongside this I read the the Amber Temple Chapter and had some interest in the
dark powers and their deals. But I find it a bit lackluster that this is the only
place that seems to have strong reference to the powers that make Strahds life hell
with his curse. I was thinking of utilising the dark power gifts early on in the
campaign to drive forward their involvement and presence in Barovia. In my
interpretation the Dark Powers are not aloof god like entities they are involved in
torturing Strahd through his curse. Instead just as he is the land they puppeteer
those in the domain as well by granting boons for groups that protect Ireena and
keep her from Strahds grip or ensuring their safety through magical power by making
deals. I mean it would be a good reminder to let Strahd know who is realy the
powerful beings here and he is their prisoner.

Can you guys provide feedback and some help on how I have planned and run COS with
VRGR as a supplement?

Dark Powers

Dark powers are a bit aloof and from what I have read throughout the Amber temple
they are cool but not as present throughout Barovia. It seems like a bit of a deus
ex power up rather than the dark powers bestowing patronage or a gift. Do not get
me wrong they are good and powerful and I will still utilise them but there are
some additions that can be made. This is where I set up for myself at least some
hint of the dark powers doing. For the first few levels the Dark Powers see the
characters as vessels to torture Strahd with through protecting Ireena. Thus in
order to maintain this they would grant boons through the Dark Gifts outlined in
Van Richtens Guide to Ravenloft. Some of these are realy cool sych as living
shadow. I employed this when running the death house and one of the characters
died. With their permission of course I read within this reddit that granting them
a dark power might ease the lower levels but come with consequences when the time
comes at the Amber Temple.

Using Different or new Statblocks

For the Brides of Strahd their statblocks are rather underwhelming akin to that of
vampire spawn. I am sure that they are your no ordinary much of a spawn as they are
Strahds consorts so let us make things a bit more interesting and dangerous. Within
Van Richtens Guide to Ravenloft there are various creatures of the undead nature
that focus on vampirism. Within the campaign I am running a key vampire stood out
which would make more sense. The Nosferatu. Thematically it is a dangerous creature
yes but not as powerful as Strahd. So assuming that the Brides are at least
somewhat competent what I have done is increased the stakes a bit by giving the
brides these stats. The sunlight sword still hurts them badly and they should not
be too difficult for a level 7-8 party.
Next is werewolves. Werewolf society is extremely complex in COS with rivaling
leaders and one trapped within Strahds dungeon (Apologies i forgot his name when
writing this post). But the base werewolf stat blocks or those of these accursed
individuals really undermines the threat they pose if the party does not ally them
or pisses them off. In VRGR there is a unique creature known as the Loup Garou. And
to be fair that is one scary werewolf. Unlike the brides what do you think of using
the Loup Garou to make things interesting within the werewolf community and
werewolves den if things go awry in COS. What do you think would need to change
from the Statblock fitting in with the module. How can I fit this in by maintaining
the main traits of the statblock making the werewolves a bit more unique but not
overpowering my party?

Conclusion

In general I would like to discuss and find out how all of the Strahdians have
utilised VRGR in your campaigns and experiences. I think it is a cool setting book
that can really elevate the horror and fear in COS with either dark power boons to
players or new and exciting stat blocks. The reason i mention this here is because
some of the dms i played with who ran the module brought up that they might have
used the book to supplement their games when they were running COS. Im curious to
hear what you guys think.

Any feedback on this would be helpful as well

u/LunchBreakHeroes reworked the Deathhouse to fit into the lore and be less
bullshit. You might want to take a look into his channel, he does great
inprovements for the whole campaign, recently released together in Raising the
Stakes.

This is very similar to MandyMod's modifications. They have a whole set of changes
about how to tell the Dust's story more effectively.

I do worry that sometimes we nerf the Death House too much -- it is called the
Death House for a reason. I'm not saying the DM should be trying to kill the entire
party -- but the house should.

I nerfed it somewhat as my party had no frontliners who can hold the line. One PC
died, good thing is that the player had a backup barbarian character ready rolled.
I worked them in by having the rest of the party finding them badly wounded and
unconscious in the cells on the lowest floor.

It definitely set the tone for how dangerous the world is.
