WHAT’S IN
WHAT’S NEW

A. What happens to the temperature of water as time elapses?

B. What is the temperature when the water boils?
C. What happens to the temperature of water while it is boiling?

ANSWER:

A. It becomes hot or cold, but depends if the weather/temperature is hot or cold.

B. 100° C. At sea level, water boils at 100° C (212° F).
C. While the water is boiling, the temperature of the liquid water does not change.
The thermal energy is absorbed as latent heat until enough heat is absorbed,
and then it turns into a gas.

WHAT’S MORE

HEAT VS TEMPERATURE

Heat and temperature are related but they are not the same. Heat depends on (1) HOW
FAST MOLECULES VIBRATE and also on (2) THE NUMBERS OF MOLECULES that
vibrate. More vibrating molecules usually mean (3) MORE INTERNAL ENERGEY.
Fewer vibrating molecules usually mean (4) LESS INTERNAL ENERGY. Faster
vibrating molecules mean (5) HIGHER TEMPERATURE. Slower vibrating molecules
mean (6) LOWER TEMPERATURE. Heat is measured in units called (7) JOULES and
(8) CALORIES. Temperature is measured in units called (9) CELCIUS (10)
FAHRENHEIT and (11) KELVIN. When matter is heated, it (12) EXPANDS.

ACTIVITY 2

Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the statement is wrong. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.

TRUE 1. Heat depends only on how fast molecules vibrate.

TRUE 2. Joule is a unit of heat energy.

TRUE 3. We measure temperature with a thermometer.

TRUE 4. The faster molecules vibrate, the more heat they give off.

TRUE 5. Temperature measures the average kinetic energy per molecule
