ACADEMIC STRESS AND MENAL HEALTH AMONG HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

By: C. Subramani, Dr. S. Kadhiravan
According to Subramani and Kadhiravan (2017), they revealed the relationship between
academic stress and mental health among students. He revealed that academic stress is
unavoidable among students and it influence students’ performance. When students
participate productively in academic forums, they are mentally healthy. During the study they
used students from public and private institutions. Which resulted to a claim where students
at private schools are under more pressure than students in public institutions. Due to the
excess of homework and other academic related assignments. There was a significant
disparity in the mental health of kids from private and public schools. He said that students at
private schools receive different nurturing and exposure than students in government
institutions, who come from low-income families and have limited exposure. One of the
causes for the rise in stress levels is because of this.

According to Marwan Zaid Bataineh (2013), the study looked at the academic pressures that
students face while in university. A total of 232 individuals were recruited from the KSU faculty
of education for this study. Academic overloads, difficult courses, little study time, burden every
semester, difficult tests, low motivation, and high family expectations were found to cause
moderate stress among students. Fear of failure was also discovered to be a substantial source of
stress among undergraduate students. Finally, the study discovered no wide differences in
academic stress among students of various academic levels and expertise.

According to Rajasekar (2013), the research looked at the effects of academic stress on
management students. Stress management refers to a set of practices that enable a person to
develop efficient coping mechanisms in the face of psychological stress. Students have various
expectations, ambitions, and beliefs that they wish to achieve, which can only be accomplished if
they are integrated into the institution's culture. The study's goal is to determine the current level
of stress, its origins, and stress management approaches that might be beneficial to management
students. The study considers a variety of stress-related elements such as physical, psychological,
personality, demographical, and environmental aspects among management students.
According to Krishnan Lal (2013), today's pupils are confronted with new educational obstacles
that need higher work on their part. Furthermore, society puts greater demands on students to
perform multiple duties, many of which are unclear, inconsistent, and unattainable in the current
socio-cultural, economic, and bureaucratic settings of our society, creating significant stress on
students, particularly high school students. Students in their teens are in the transitional phase,
which is a stage between childhood and maturity. The different difficulties that occur, such as
troubles at school, colleges, financial problems, family problems, and problems in their
surroundings, are said to be the source of stress.

According to Sharma et al. (2016), their study reported on the utilization of a variety of stress-
reduction techniques in their study. Stress can be alleviated by performing one physical exercise
on a regular basis. You may also use various time management tools and participate in leisure
activities that are beneficial to students. It was also proposed that institutions create a relaxing
environment in order to reduce stress.

According to Reddy et al. (2018), there is a flow difference in student stress. Academic stress
continues to be a serious problem impacting a student's mental health and well-being, according
to the findings of this study. Differences in stress experience among students were also
identified. As a result, management of stress becomes crucial at all levels, including personal,
societal, and institutional. Techniques such as biofeedback, yoga, life-skills training, mindfulness
meditation, and psychotherapy have been found to be effective in reducing stress among
students. Understanding the sources of stress from various aspects will allow professionals in the
field to make interventions for students using the most effective strategies. Improving a student's
holistic well-being would eventually be beneficial not just to the person but also to the
institution's overall productivity.

According to Khan and Kausar (2013), their study observed that stress had a big influence on
academic performance, while no significant gender differences were discovered. The difference
between junior and senior students was obvious. As a result of this study, it was established that
severe or delayed academic stress lowers a student's academic performance, limits his capacity to
study effectively, and prevents better time management. As a result, students must create good
study habits by allocating sufficient time to meet the demands of their studies.

According to Kaur (2014), academic stress has an impact on teens' mental health. Academically
stressed girls were shown to have lower mental health when compared to boys. According to the
study, parents sometimes put stress and pressure on their children, causing their mental health to
suffer.

According to Dimitrov (2017), students' stress can be addressed through a variety of methods;
nevertheless, they must pay attention to their personal well-being. Stress may be readily
managed by finding the perfect combination of sleep, diet, exercise, job, and entertainment. To
begin with, the educational system does not assist students in developing their personalities;
rather, it provides merely academic qualifications. The majority of pupils are not completely
exposed to the outside world, resulting in a lack of personality development. Instead, it causes
students to be anxious and fearful about their future and career prospects. They also revealed that
our educational system's language of education is a challenge that has yet to be resolved. In most
cases, there is no choice as to which language of our educational system is required. Many
academic institutions now prioritize English, making it challenging for students from rural
backgrounds who were taught in their mother tongue. Third, many academic institutions teach
disciplines that are unrelated to work. Fresh graduates who leave academic institutions are
lacking in good communication skills, which are essential for work.

According to G. Jain and M. Singhai (2017), the lack of appropriate assistance is the major
source of stress for students. Students are stressed due to a variety of personal and societal issues.
Lack of clarity and a shortage of qualified career counselors result in a lack of direction. Even
after graduation, students remain ignorant about their professions and worried about their
employment prospects. Academic pressure, extracurricular activities, assignments, and other
aspects of the study have all expanded dramatically. Also, to add the pressure from parents
where they want their children to participate in the rat race and outperform their peers in order to
improve their own social position.
