4 AXLES
4.1 General Datas :
4.1.1 Location - Fixations :

All models of machines, except CD ones, have the same construction (see drawing Nr 80 741.2 and 88
734.9) :

• front axle directly fixed on the chassis

• rear axle with free oscillation (± 10°) between limits, to give all terrain capability to the machine

All CD models are built as follows (see drawing Nr 92 098.3 and 92 100.7) :

• front axle with cylinder controlled oscillation (± 6°), to give levelling capability to the machine
• rear axle with free oscillation (± 10°) between limits, to give all terrain capability to the machine

4.1.2 Power Transmission :

The transmission of the machines is an hydrostatic transmission with variable displacement pump and motor.
Pump is driven by the diesel engine. Pump drives the hydraulic motor. The hydraulic motor drives the axles.

There is only one reduction ratio on all models of machines, see drawings :

• Nr 85 436.4 for T25 models

• CRS0569 for T30 models

The movement from the hydraulic motor is reduced by a single gear transfer gearbox. This gearbox is
directly fixed on the front axle. The output shaft of this gearbox goes directly in front axle on one end and on
the other comes a cardan shaft which gives movement to rear axle.

Both axles have the same reduction ratio and are fitted with :

• central differential
• limited slip (40 %) differential on front axle only
• wheel reducer

The reduction ratio is identical on all models of machines, only the size of the axles may differ :

• transfer gearbox : 2.031 :1

• central differential : 2.384 :1
• wheel reducer : 6.0 :1
• total ratio : 29.05 :1

4.1.3 Steering :

On all models of machines, both axles are steering axles and are fitted with integrated steering cylinders.
These are double rod types connected to pivots by adjustable push-rods. There is on each axle a sensor
which is detecting the position when the wheels are in a straight line.

4.1.4 Brakes :

On all models of machines, only front axles are fitted with discs brakes used for service, parking or
emergency brakes. The number of discs may vary from one model to the other but they are always braking
on the transmission shaft between differential and wheel reducer. There is no brake at all in the rear axle.

Service brakes are hydraulically operated. Parking brakes are hydraulically operated.

4.2.3 Brakes :

On all models of the machines, the brakes are operated as follows with the same actuating components :

• service brakes : by a hydraulic valve, actuated by a pedal

• parking brakes : hydraulically operated with a lever
• emergency brakes : parking brakes are used as emergency brakes

The axle is fitted with:

• 2 x 2 discs (2 on each side of the differential) in oil bath, on T25 models

• 2 x 3 discs (3 on each side of the differential) in oil bath, on T30 models
• service actuation through a brake valve, see the hydraulic schematic
• parking brakes are negative brakes. An elastic washer tightens the discs and hydraulic pressure
is needed to release the brakes. Actuation through a hand lever operating a pressure reduction
valve

4.5 PARKING BRAKE RELEASE PROCEDURE :

When there is no pressure in the hydraulic system, the handbrake will be engaged, due to
the springloaded washers. To mechanicly release the handbrake, follow this procedure :

• At each side of the central part of the front axle, you will find 3 bolts, located 120°
from each other. (See pics. 93801 and 93802). These bolts are located in a bit
lower, grinded area.
• First complete this procedure on the 3 bolts of 1 side, then go to the other side.
• Screw the 3 bolts progressively (per 1/4 of a turn) and alternatively in. This until
you reach the end of their stroke (2 to 2,5 turns).

system

Take off allen plug

Attention : On certain models the brake unlocking bolts are accesible after having taken
off a plastic plug, on other models you may have to undo the plug by an allen key. Then
you can acces the brake releasing bolt.

4.6 NOISE IN CARRARO FRONT AXLES :

In some cases, when wrong oil has been used in the front axles, the differential and brakes can get
damaged and become very noisy.
If you have a noisy front axle, you can try to solve the noise problem by following this procedure:

1. DRAIN THE OIL OUT OF THE FRONT AXLE.

2. FILL UP THE FRONT AXLE WITH THE RECOMMENDED OIL. THIS IS AN OIL TYPE APPLICABLE
FOR IMMERGED BRAKES OR LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIALS.

3. DRIVE AWAY WITH THE MACHINE VERY SMOOTHLY.

4. DRIVE SLOWLY IN A STRAIGHT LINE , THEN PROGRESSIVELY START TURNING THE WHEELS
WITH MORE AND MORE ANGLE.

5. CHECK IF THE NOISE DISAPPEARED, TOP UP THE OIL AGAIN IF NECESSARY.

6. IF THE NOISE PERSISTS, INTERNAL PARTS HAVE PROBABLY ALREADY BEEN DAMAGED. YOU
WILL HAVE TO STRIP AND REBUILD THE FRONT AXLE.

OILS THAT CAN BE USED

• TOTAL TRANSMISSION MP
• MOBIL FLUID 422 / 425
• ELF TRANSELF B12 OR SF2
• ESSO TORQUE FLUID 56

FOR ANY OTHER OILS PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SUPPLIER.

4.7 CARRARO AXLE UPDATES :

4.7.1 CASING MATERIAL

The casing bearings holder material will be changed from grey cast iron to spheroidal cast iron on the TLS40
and TLS35 axles.
We found some cases in the field, mainly on TLS40, where the casting was breaking between the 2
bearings, and broken pieces were damaging the inner parts of the hub.

This new casting is stronger and the oil circulation holes are different.

When ordering a wheel hub casting, BPS has been instructed the following:
- the old CARRARO casting ref. 97413.9, can still be used, but only on the small machines as T2556, T2566
and T3071.
- the new spheroidal cast iron wheel hub ref. 6912585 has to be used on T3571, T35120, T40140 and
T40170.

SN Breaks on new machines:

T3571 3628 11128

T3571L 3629 11015
T35120L 3627 11013

T40140(tier2) 3632 11153
T40170(tier2) 3633 11222

4.7.2 COMPLETE HUB SUBASSEMBLIES

For repairs, a complete hub subassembly has been created with inner shaft included but without U-joint.
Available from BPS.
Hub subassembly for TLS40:
Front left and rear right: ref. 6912574
Front right and rear left: ref. 6912575

4.7.3 END REDUCTIONS REBUILD
Also an important note is that when the end reduction of a wheel is being rebuild, the bolts ref. 89964.1 with
qty 6 or 8, need to be refitted with LOCTITE (correct torque is 120 Nm). This prevents them becoming loose
again, especially on the T40170, T40140 and T35120.
It is also advisable to check if these bolts are still tightened, when doing an oil change on the hubs.
Therefore you need to remove the wheel and open the hub.

4.7.4 HUB OIL MAINTENANCE INTERVAL

We recommend to replace the oil in the hubs at first before 200h, then at 500h and then every 500h (a
change in the service manuals will be implemented).
For warm conditions CARRARO recommends 80W-140 or 75W-160 oil grade.

These updates are also on the Bobcatnet-esa site.
