Ways of Talking about the Future


A. Add a sentence. Use the verbs in brackets and “be going to”.

✪ (wash) Martin’s sweater is dirty. He’s going to wash it.


1. (read) Mike has just bought a magazine. He’s going to read a magazine.
2. (fry) I’ve decided to eat these eggs. I’m going to fry them.
3. (sell) Mary doesn’t need the sofa. She’s going to sell it.
4. (correct) My work has several mistakes in it. I’m going to correct them.
5. (accept) Someone has offered Carol a job. She’s going to accept it.

B. Use the notes to write predictions about the world 50 years from now.

✪ There – be – twice as many people. There will be twice as many people.


1. The world – have – one government. The world will have one government.
2. There – not be – any wars. There won’t be any wars.
3. Computers – decide – our future. Computers will decide our future.
4. Everyone – have – a personal robot. Everyone will have a personal robot.

C. Complete the sentences. Use be going to or will with the verbs.

✪ Oh, you’ve got a ticket for the play. – Yes, I’m going to see it on Friday.

D. For each situation/arrangement write a sentence

✪ Louise has accepted an invitation to Dave’s party next week.


She’s going to Dave’s party next week.
1. Elaine has agreed to be in the office on Saturday. (work)

2. Karen has just bought her plane ticket to Acapulco. (fly)

E. Patricia is on a tour of England. Describe one day of the tour

✪ 9.30am bus to Stratford. At 9.30, she takes the bus to Stratford.


Use the verbs: arrive, do, have and leave.
1. 12.30pm arrival in Stratford. At 12:30pm, the bus arrives in Straftord.
2. 1.00pm lunch. At 1.00pm, she stops and leaves the bus to have lunch in McDonald’s.
3. 2.00pm tour of the town. After lunch, at 2.00pm, she does a tour of the town.
4. 5.30pm departure. At, 5.30pm, she departures the town.
