LESSON 5: RELATIVITY
Activity #5
Name: Porte, Ulysses C. Strand and Section: Stem 12 R-Siloam

A. Direction: Give a short explanation about how these things affect people’s observations by giving example scenarios.

Time Dilation

Time dilation, in the theory of special relativity, the “slowing down” of a clock as determined by an observer

who is in relative motion with respect to that clock. In special relativity, an observer in inertial (i.e.,

nonaccelerating) motion has a well-defined means of determining which events occur simultaneously with a

given event.

Length Contraction

Length contraction is the phenomenon that a moving object's length is measured to be shorter than its

proper length, which is the length as measured in the object's own rest frame.

Relativistic Momentum

Relativistic momentum is defined in such a way that conservation of momentum holds in all inertial frames.

Whenever the net external force on a system is zero, relativistic momentum is conserved, just as is the case

for classical momentum.

B. Problem Solving
Direction: Read the questions comprehensively. Write your complete solution on the solution box and encircle or box the final
answer. Don’t forget the unit.
1. A spacecraft is moving past Earth at a constant speed v which is 0.90c. The astronaut measures the time
interval between successive ticks to be ∆𝑡𝑜 = 1500𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑠. Find the time interval ∆𝑡 that the
observer on Earth measures between the ticks at the astronaut’s clock.
Solution:

Given: v = 0.90c ∆𝑡𝑜 = 1500𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑠

Required: ∆𝑡 = ?
Equation: ∆𝑡 = 𝒕𝒐
𝑣2
√1 − ( )
𝑐2
Solution:
ms to s:
1500ms = 1.5s
1000

∆𝑡 = 1.5s = 1.5s
0.90𝑐2
√1 − ( ) √0.19
𝑐2

Answer: ∆𝒕 = 𝟑. 𝟒𝟒𝐬

2. A space shuttle passes over the Earth at 𝑣 = 0.90𝑐 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑. If the length of space shuttle observed by the
astronaut inside is 100meters, what is the length of it observed by someone on Earth?

Solution

Given: v = 0.90c 𝐿𝑜 = 100𝑚

Required: 𝑳 = ? ? ?
Equation: 𝐿 = 𝐿𝑜 √1 − 𝑣 2 /𝑐 2

Solution: 𝐿 = 100𝑚 √1 − (0.90𝑐)2 /𝑐 2

= 100𝑚 √1 − (0.81)
= 100𝑚 √(0.19)

Answer: 𝑳 = 𝟒𝟑. 𝟓𝟖𝟗𝒎
