Recognition
Many airport codes are easy to recognize. For example:
• MIA is the code for Miami, Florida
• CLE is the code for Cleveland, Ohio.
• AMS is the code for Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Other airport codes are more difficult to recognize and learn. In many cases, there may
be no logical association between an airport’s code and the main city it serves. In these
situations, you will need to rely on your memory for the airport code. Listed below are
some examples of city codes that are difficult to recognize.
• GEG is the code for Spokane, Washington.
• OGG is the code for Kahului-Maui, Hawaii.
Overview
This tutorial covers the airport codes and locations of the ‘most common’ airports served
by United Airlines.
As you review the material carefully, you will find directions for completing the tutorial
throughout this document.
There will be a test on the second day of training to test your ability to write the names
of airports and their codes.
Objectives
At the conclusion of studying the tutorial, you will know how to:
• Write the name or two-letter code of each U.S. state on a map of the United
States.
• Encode the three-letter airport code of the airports United flies to, when given the
airport city name.
• Decode the airport city name of each airport United flies to, when given the three-
letter airport code.
Multi-Airport Cities
Some large cities have more than one airport, and also have a general city code. These
codes are used for looking up flight availability as well as for pricing purposes. For
example:
• NYC is the code for the New York City area, covering John F. Kennedy (JFK),
LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark Liberty (EWR) airports.
• CHI is the code for the Chicago area, covering O'Hare International Airport
(ORD), named after Orchard Field, the airport's former name, and Midway
(MDW)
• WAS is the code for the Washington, D.C. area, covering Dulles (IAD), Reagan
(DCA), and Baltimore–Washington (BWI).
There are multi-airport cities that use the code for the city in one of their major airports
and then assigning another code to another airport. For example:
• Houston (HOU) - William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) and George Bush
Intercontinental Airport (IAH)
• Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) – Self-named (DFW), Love Field (DAL), Meacham
(FTW), Alliance (AFW), Addison (ADS)
• Miami (MIA) – Self-named city (MIA), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), West Palm Beach
(PBI)
• London (LON) – Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW), London City (LCY), Stansted
(STN), Luton (LTN) and Southend (SEN)
• Tokyo (TYO) – Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT)
• Paris (PAR) – Orly (ORY), Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Le Bourget (LBG) and
Beauvais (BVA)
• Seoul (SEL) – Incheon (ICN) and Gimpo (GMP)
• Beijing (BJS) – Capital (PEK) and Nanyuan (NAY)
Sister Cities
Sister cities are considered the same origin and destination, for United, when
determining the journey type of a domestic itinerary.
Identifying sister cities is helpful specially when protecting customers impacted by flight
delays and/or cancellations.

U.S. Destinations
U.S. Destinations
On the following pages, you will find the most popular airports that United and United
Express flies to in the United States. Each airport location is identified by the three-
letter airport code.
U.S. Regions
The map is divided into regions. On all of the maps, north is at the top of the map. You
will need to carefully study each region. The regions are as follows:
• Northeast
• Southeast
• North Central
• South Central and Mountain
• Pacific
• U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico
When you have completed studying these regions, you will need to identify, from
memory, all U.S. state names and codes, as well as, all of the U.S. airport names and
codes.
We have included the following items in this tutorial to assist your learning:
• A list of all of the states in the United States and the two-letter code for each
state.
• An alphabetical list of United’s destination city names and their 3-letter airport
codes for each region.
United Hubs
Hub and Spoke System
Within the United States, legacy carriers utilize the Hub and Spoke system.
By using this system, airlines are able to market flights between many cities without
having to offer non-stop flights for each city pair.
A Hub and Spoke can be compared to a wheel with its hub and spokes. The hub is the
center of the wheel, and the spokes extend out in all directions from the hub.
Hubs The major cities, or heavily served cities, of an airline. They are
chosen because of the location, resources and facilities.
Spokes The portions of the journey to and from the Hub.
Flights are scheduled from spoke cities surrounding a hub so that they arrive at the hub
city around the same time. The customers from the incoming flights can then connect to
outgoing flights.
UA Hubs
United Airlines has a total of eight hubs. United Airlines utilizes seven U.S. hubs.
They are:
• On the West Coast of the United States, UA’s hubs are San Francisco, California
(SFO) and Los Angeles, California (LAX).
• In the Mountain region of the United States, UA’s hub is Denver, Colorado
(DEN).
• In the Mid-West region of the United States, UA’s hub is Chicago O’Hare, Illinois
(ORD).
• In the South Central region, UA’s hub is Houston Intercontinental, Texas (IAH).
• On the East Coast of the United States, UA’s hubs are New York/Newark Liberty
(EWR) and Washington Dulles, DC (IAD).
Practice
Please write down the three-letter airport code next to its location on the map—the gold
dots.
International
United has an international hub in Micronesia located in Guam (GUM).
Example:
When a customer requests travel between two cities in the U.S. which do not offer non-
stop service, you will need to offer the most logical connection through one of our Hubs.
For example, if a customer requests to travel from BIS to ABQ, most likely they would
need to connect through our DEN hub. This is because it is geographically the most
logical. The routes to and from DEN create the spokes.

Vermont In the northern part of the state is the city of BurlingTon, Vermont. It is
easy to see that this city’s airport code: BTV is derived from the city and
state names.
New Hampshire In southeastern New Hampshire, United provides airline service to
MancHesTer, the state’s largest city. MancHesTer’s airport is coded:
MHT, and it also serves the capital of New Hampshire—nearby Concord.
Massachusetts South of MHT is another United city: BOSton. The code for BOSton’s
Logan International Airport is: BOS.
Connecticut West of PVD is the airport that serves both Hartford, CT. and Springfield,
MA. The name of this airport is BraDLey International Airport. The code
is: BDL.
Rhode Island The capital of this small state is ProViDence, and United provides service
through the airport coded: PVD.
Maryland Maryland surrounds Washington DC on the east and north. United
serves this state through its major city, Baltimore. The airport name is
Baltimore-Washington International. The code is: BWI.
New Jersey Serving northern New Jersey and nearby New York City is the huge
airport at NEWaRk. The code for the airport at NEWaRk is: EWR.
New York A short distance northwest of the JFK airport and closest to Manhattan is
LaGuArdia Airport, named after a popular former mayor of New York City.
The code for this airport is: LGA.
As you might expect, there is also a general city code for metropolitan
New York City: NYC. This code includes LGA and JFK (and for some
purposes, EWR).
Continuing north is the state capital, ALBany. ALBany’s airport code is:
ALB.
Further west, overlooking Lake Ontario, is ROChester. This is another
easy-to-remember airport code: ROC.
Finally, near the famous Niagara Falls and overlooking Lake Erie, is
BUFfalo. The code for this airport is: BUF
Pennsylvania United serves Pennsylvania through three airports located in the southern
half of the state. The most westerly is PITtsburgh. The code for
Pittsburgh is very easy to remember: PIT.
Further east is the state capital, Harrisburg. Its’ airport is located near
MiDdleTown. That is why the Harrisburg airport code is: MDT.
In the southeast corner of the state, on the borders of New Jersey and
Delaware, is Pennsylvania’s largest city, PHiLadelphia. The code for
PHiLadelphia’s International Airport is: PHL.
Note:
These additional destinations are not included in the airport codes test administered in
Chicago (CHIRR) and Houston (NHCRR) Contact Centers.
Southeast Region
Airports in the Southeast Region
Florida United serves several airports in Florida. The one at the southern
tip of the state is MIAmi. The code for MIAmi’s airport is: MIA.
Just 27 miles north of MIA is Fort LauderdaLe. The official airport
name is the Fort LauderdaLe/Hollywood International Airport. The
airport code is: FLL.
Then, 43 miles north of FLL, is West Palm Beach. The name of
this city’s airport is Palm Beach International, which explains the
airport’s code: PBI.
The airports at MIA, FLL, and PBI are relatively close to each other.
On the Gulf Coast is TamPA International Airport. This airport
serves TamPA, Saint Petersburg, and Clearwater, Florida.
Remember, the principal city in this area gives us the airport code:
TPA.
84 miles northeast of TPA is Orlando. This airport was once
McCOy Field. Orlando is now the home of MiCkey MOuse’s
Disney World. The airport code is still: MCO.
Georgia In the northwestern part of Georgia, United flies into the state
capital, ATLanta. ATLanta’s airport is one of the busiest in the
world and its code is: ATL.
North Carolina Two airports in North Carolina are served by United. The one in
the west is CharLoTte, whose airport code is: CLT.
100 miles northeast of CLT is the airport serving GreenSbOro and
High Point. The airport code is: GSO.
Virginia RIChmond is the capital of Virginia and has an easy code to
remember: RIC.
Washington, DC There are three airports serving Washington, DC, and United flies
to all three. Earlier you learned about BWI, which serves the
Washington DC area. The other two airports are actually located in
nearby Virginia. The International Airport, Dulles, is located 26
miles west of the city. The code is: IAD. (Be sure to pronounce
the airport name clearly; otherwise it sounds like Dallas, TX.)
The closest airport is 4 miles south of downtown, the District of
ColumbiA airport, named Ronald Reagan Washington National. Its
code is: DCA. It is located beside the Potomac River overlooking
the Washington, DC skyline.
The huge metropolitan area centered around WAShington, DC and
including Baltimore, MD, also has a general (city) code: WAS.
Note:
These additional destinations are not included in the airport codes test administered in
Chicago (CHIRR) and Houston (NHCRR) Contact Centers.
Note:
These additional destinations are not included in the airport codes test administered in

Most destinations are served by United Airlines.
Note:
These additional destinations are not included in the airport codes test administered in
Chicago (CHIRR) and Houston (NHCRR) Contact Centers.
Pacific Region
Airports in the Pacific Region
Alaska United serves Alaska’s major city, ANChorage, through its
international airport. The code for ANChorage is: ANC.
California United serves nine airports in California, more than any other
state. It is not surprising when you learn that California is
home to 98 prominent corporations' headquarters. The state
is a center of trade, technology, agriculture, and tourism.
Eight miles west and across the bay from OAK, is San
FranciscO. San FranciscO International Airport is home of
United’s gigantic Maintenance Operations Center. As you
can see from our cues, this airport is coded: SFO.
South of BUR near the coast is the major airport serving Los
Angeles: Los Angeles International Airport. To remember
the code think of LA + X. Los Angeles Airport is coded:
LAX.
36 air miles south of LAX you will find the airport that serves
SaNta Ana in Orange County. This is the closest airport to
Disneyland. Many customers refer to this airport by its
official name John Wayne Airport. If you can remember
Disneyland is in SaNta Ana it will be easy to remember the
airport code: SNA.

These additional destinations are not included in the airport codes test administered in
Chicago (CHIRR) and Houston (NHCRR) Contact Centers.
Overview
United flies to more than 120 international destinations in more than 70 countries in five
continents.
In order to book United’s international routes and also connecting service to offline
international routes, it is imperative to have a good understanding of geography. Keep
in mind that a good rule when building an itinerary to an offline point is to choose one of
the farthest online cities and then build a connection with another carrier.
International Availability
International availability entails more than simply reviewing flight schedules through
Compass or EZR. To fully understand international travel, you must be familiar with
global geography as it relates to Time Zones, the International Date Line and the areas
of the world as defined by the IATA (International Air Travel Association) Conference.
International Destinations
On the following pages, you will find the International airports that United flies to. Each
airport location is identified by the three-letter airport code. International locations are
divided into regions. On all of the maps, north is at the top of the map. You will need to
carefully study each region. The regions are as follows:
• Mexico
o Note: Mexico is considered domestic for UA call routing team.
• Canada
• Caribbean
• Central America
• South America
• Europe
• Africa, Middle East and India
• Asia
• Micronesia
• South West Pacific
The areas are simply referred to as Area 1, Area 2 and Area 3, also known as Traffic
Conferences.
• Area 1 (TC1) The Americas (North, Central and South, and the Caribbean)
• Area 3 (TC3) Asia (includes Japan/Korea, Southeast Asia and South Asian
Subcontinent) and Southwest Pacific

U.S. Gateways
A gateway city is defined as the first point of arrival, or the last point of departure, in a
country.
For United, a gateway is the last U.S. city prior to departure for an international location.
For example:
If a customer requests to travel from Santiago, Chile to Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., the city
at which the customer first arrives in the United States is the U.S. gateway city.
• SCL-IAH-ORD
o Santiago, Chile (SCL) – Houston, TX, US (IAH) – Chicago, IL, US (ORD)
Practice
What city is the gateway in the following itineraries?
BOS-EWR-FRA
SAT-IAH-LHR
DEN-SFO-SIN
ORD-IAH-LIM
Traffic Restrictions
Many countries allow only the national carrier to offer a service within their country or
region. A foreign carrier would be restricted from collecting revenue on these routes.
The restrictions include two categories:
1. Cabotage
2. Local Traffic Restrictions
Cabotage
The restriction of foreign carriers transporting customers between two cities within the
same country by connecting via another country.
An example of a Cabotage restricted route is:
• All non-Canadian carriers are restricted from transporting customers between
two points in Canada by connecting via another country.
• For example, UA cannot transport a customer from YYZ to YVR by connecting in
CHI. If the customer is traveling via these routes, they must stop in CHI for at
least four hours.
• Information can be found in CORE > Other> Cabotage
UA does not currently have any routes with local traffic restrictions.
