Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The COVID-19 Pandemic has affected all sectors of the world economy and society. The
global outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has spread worldwide affecting almost all countries
and territories. The outbreak was first identified in December in Wuhan China. The countries
around the world cautioned the public to take responsive care. The public care strategies have
included handwashing, wearing face masks, physical distancing, and avoiding mass gathering
and assemblies. Lockdown and staying home strategies have been put in place as the needed
action to flatten the curve and control the transmission of the disease (Sintema 2020). The
impact of the pandemic and its consequences one felt differently depending on our status as
individuals and as members of society. While some try to adapt to working online,
homeschooling their children and ordering food via instacart, others have no choice but to be
exposed to the virus while keeping society functioning. Our different social identities and the
social groups we belong to determine our inclusion within society and, by extension, our
vulnerability to epidemics. The impact is far reaching and has affected learning during this
academic year or even more in the coming days. Several schools, colleges, and universities
have discontinued face-to-face teaching. There is a pressing need to innovate and implement
alternate educational and assessment strategies. The Covid-19 pandemic has provided us with
an opportunity to pave the way for introducing digital learning (Dhawan 2020).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

A correlation study to assess knowledge and self-expressed stigma regarding COVID-19
Impacts and outbreak.

Coronavirus are zoonotic. This means they first develop animals before developing to humans.
For the virus to pass from animal to humans, a person has to come into close contact with an
animal that carries infection.

One of the viruses develops in people, coronaviruses can be spread from person to person
through respiratory droplets. This is a technical name for the wet stuff that moves through the
air when you cough or sneeze.

The viral material hangs out in these droplets and can be breathed into the respiratory tract
(your windpipe and lungs), where the virus can then lead to an infection.

Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered

coronavirus.

The virus that causes Covid-19 is mainly transmitted through droplets generated when an
infected person coughs, sneezes or exhales. These droplets are too heavy to hang in the air,
and quickly fall on the floors or surfaces.
People can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are within close proximity of someone
who has covid-19, or by touching a contaminated surface and then your eyes, nose or mouth.
Most people who fall sick with Covid-19 will experience mild to moderate symptoms and
recover without special treatment.

Common symptoms:
● Fever.
● Tiredness.
● Dry cough.
Some people may experience:
● Aches and pains.
● Nasal congestion.
● Runny nose.
● Sore throat. ● Diarrhoea.

On average it takes 5-6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to
show, however it can take up to 14 days.
Older people and people with certain health conditions have a higher risk for severe
complications if they contract the virus. These health condition includes:
● Lung conditions, such as COPD and asthma
● Certain heart conditions
● Immune system conditions, such as HIV
● Cancer that requires treatment
● Severe obesity
● Other health conditions, if not well controlled, such as diabetes, kidney disease, or liver
disease

Pregnant women have a higher risk of complications from other viral infections, but it's not yet
known if this is a case for Covid-19.

Covid-19 can be diagnosed similarly to others caused by viral infections: using a blood, saliva,
or tissue sample. However, most tests use cotton swabs to retrieve a sample from the inside
nostrils.
There's currently no treatment specifically approved for Covid-19, and no cure for an infection,
although treatments and vaccines are currently under study. Instead, treatment focuses on
managing symptoms as the virus runs its course.

Coronaviruses like SARS and MERS are also treated by managing symptoms. In some cases,
experimental treatments are tested to see how effective they are.

Examples of therapies used for these illnesses include:

● antiviral or retroviral medications
● breathing support, such as mechanical ventilation
● steroids to reduce lung swelling
● blood plasma transfusions

To prevent the spread of Covid-19:

● Avoid large events or mass gatherings.
● Avoid close contact (within about 6 feet, or 2 meters) with anyone who is sick or has
symptoms.
● Stay home as much as possible and keep distance between yourself and others (within
about 6 feet, or 2 meters) if Covid-19 is spreading in your community, especially if you
have a higher risk of illness. Keep in mind some people may have Covid-19 spread to
others, even if they don't have symptoms or don't know they have Covid-19.
● Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based
hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol
● Cover your face with a cloth face covering in public spaces, such as grocery stores,
where it's difficult to avoid close contact with others, especially if you're in an area with
ongoing community spread. Use only non-medical masks – surgical masks and N95
respirators should be reserved for health care providers.
Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw
away the used tissue.
● Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
● Avoid sharing dishes, glasses, beddings and other household items if you're sick.
● Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces daily.
● Stay home from work, school and public areas if you're sick, unless you're going to get
medical care. Avoid taking public transportation if you're sick.

1.3 Scope and Delimitation

This study discusses the ways to prevent the Coronavirus disease, how we provide
action to keep ourselves safe, and its effect when we experience the said virus. Also this study
was conducted to find out people's response towards the Impact of the Pandemic. The
researcher's chose Impact of the Pandemic among many environmental issues; the particular
reason for the circumstance was, the Coronavirus disease is a growing crisis worldwide. The
aspects studied were the respondents feedback to Understanding the Impact of the Pandemic.
Along the lines of how their everyday experiences go, how they affect lifestyles and how they
generate action.

Objectives of the Study

● To assess the knowledge regarding the Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic.
● Study to assess the Understanding the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic.
● To associate the major findings of knowledge regarding Covid-19 outbreak with selected
demographic.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The study COVID-19 provides us a comprehensive detail regarding how to fight this
deadly disease. Indeed, all regulations and policies implemented by the government are a
product of studies of the virus. Without the Study about COVID-19, the world might face more
serious adverse consequences. The study benefits us to know more about the history of
coronavirus and what are the ways to prevent or to avoid this virus. The COVID-19 Pandemic
has resulted in unprecedented research worldwide. The importance of knowledge in combating
this emergency. As we navigate through and beyond this pandemic, which will have a long
lasting impact on our world, including research and the biomedical research enterprise, it is
important to recognize and address opportunities and strategies for, and challenges of research
and strengthening our workforce in fighting this particular situation.
